I would think about moving up to a synthetic, much better then a semi synthetic. 5w-40 or 10w-40 are fine. Hi Steve,

The Zenoah not really that fussy, especially if the engine is stock so any good quality well branded two stroke oil will be fine. I run tuned Zen26's and 29's in my boats, I tend to use the Silkolene Pro KR2, but have also used the Castrol A747 in the past, both contain castor oil. I run mine at around 16:1 mix.

Looking to carry out a pre-winter oil change on my 2005 STI UK. The car only has 17k on the clock, and being new to me, I will be changing the oil very frequently. It is only running a full Miltek exhaust with panel filter, running 325bhp.

What would you recommend me running?

Hi Tim,

I'm running a 382/340 blob STI with DCCD (full spec is in the garage), and will be looking to do an engine oil change just before or after Christmas.
I used Millers CFS 10w60 for the first change when I bought the car in February, but am considering going for a 10w50 or similar as I'm aware 10w60 is usually recommended for the heavily modified cars.

I'm looking at an SC42 just after Xmas so would be good if I can get something which will be good enough to look after the engine with my current 20g and the 42 if and when it goes on

The Nanodrive CFS is, on paper, the best oil available, but the Pro S and CFS are both really good oils, so all are good choices for your car.

As the car is standard and getting used on the road, there is no need to go for a thicker oil than a 40. As you were looking at the CFS, it's such a good oil that it will cope with the hard road use without needing to go for a thicker grade. A 5w gives better cold start protection than a 10w, so a 5w-40 makes more sense for your car than a 10w-50.

Hi Oilman.

I ordered a service kit from you on Monday so hope it turns up in time for a oil change this weekend.

What I would like to know is my MY99 wagon is now 100k. Fsh and pretty much standard. It very rarely sees boost.

What I want to know is what diff and gear oil do I need, and how much of it. There aren't plans for power hikes.


Ps also, my MY93 Civic ESi vtec will need an oil change. Mileage 102k. Driven almost daily. Totally standard. Oil and filter please.

Hi,

Can i get a recommendation for my 2003 STI PPP.

It's always had 5W30 from previous owners but this will be my first service, should I stick to 5W30 or change?
It's not a track car but it is a daily driver, it's also garaged every night so doesn't have to deal with ice cold starts.

Yes, get an oil cooler. Before your next trackday.

Oilman replied to you saying a good oil is fine up to 150C, but that's based purely on the spec for a virgin oil ie. freshly changed before the trackday. The reality is that you get fuel dilution on an Impreza, especially a tuned one, which degrades the viscosity of the oil and impairs its high temperature performance. This is because the fuelling is a little uneven between cylinders, so the mapper makes it safe across the board. The result is that the fuel consumption isn't great and the oil suffers fuel dilution over time. In addition to fuel dilution, oil loses its viscosity with use due to shear forces in the engine.

Ok, here are a couple of real examples from a 360bhp classic with an oil cooler (max temp 100C). I had Millers analyze 2 oil samples. First up, Motul 300V 15W50 which had done 2-3k road miles plus 1 trackday (approx 100 miles on track). This was down to 79% of the viscosity on the spec sheet for virgin oil. Second was Millers CFS 10W60 after 2-3k road miles plus 2 trackdays (approx 200 miles on track). That was down to 75% of spec sheet viscosity. Millers tech guy deemed both viscosities to be "on the very low end of what is acceptable".

In case you're wondering why I did the oil analysis, previously I blew the big-end bearings on a trackday. The damage was almost certainly due to a combination of high temperature and slightly too old oil: 130C peak (this was before I got the oil cooler fitted), on CFS 10W60 which had done 4k road miles plus 1 previous trackday. Previously I had kept to 3k road miles with a max of 2 trackdays, but on that occasion I slipped up and paid the price. After the engine rebuild, and oil cooler install at the same time, I was keen to see how soon the oil degraded with use. The answer is that, in my engine at least, the oil viscosity is almost exhausted after 2-3k road miles and a max of 2 trackdays.

So, T20Driver, how often do you change your oil? And have you got an oil cooler yet?

Hi Chris

The oil you need depends on the service schedule the car is on. If it is on an annual/10k miles service, you need an oil that meets the 505.01 specification. If it's the variable service schedule (up to 20k/2 years), you need an oil that meets the 507.00 spec.
