in relation to using these "racing oils" in a daily driver that might not got any hard racing is there any negatives in using the likes of motul or Gulf oils? Or is it just a simple case the oil is being optomized and probably overkill? I have an oil temp/pressure gauges going in soon so ill be able to keep an eye on things a bit better

There are only two negatives I can think of
1. Price - ester oils aren't cheap, but then again, a lot of non-ester oils cost more.
2. There are very few manufacturer approvals for them, so often not suitable for cars under warranty. A lot of people we deal with will often change to an ester oil, if suitable for their car, when it's out of warranty.

A 5w-40 is ideal.
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx
Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Fuchs GT1 XTL/Supersyn, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

Oilman,
Got a 54 blob wrx with PPP circa 260bhp. Daily driving with bursts of hard driving. Car's currently been run on 10w-40 Castrol magnatec semi synth all its life before I picked it up recently. Is it worth me going to fully synthetic now, and what should I get, I'm thinking 5w-40 fully synth? Is the Shell Helix worth getting?
Cheers.

Different type of reply but it may make you smile.
There are reasons for using a synthetic oil but very little actual hard proof it is 100% needed.
I just do not know the answer.
You have a 260 bhp motor that has been using a £25 semi synthetic oil for a good while.
Why not spend say £40 on a used oil analysis that will advise of the wear rate of your engine and give an opinion on if it is causing problems with your engine.
If it is good report, keep on using the Magnatec, if not go for a synthetic.
Easy job to take a sample and send it away.
How many miles has it done
I will be doing that this month just to see what the oil is up too.

Drummog is right about using a synthetic, it's not needed, but synthetics will give the best protection. As the car is low mileage, there should not be much wear, so it would be a good time to change to synthetic and keep the engine in good condition.

I've done several track days where my temps get to about 125 ish on my gauge after about 15 mins when I then feel I'd better let the car cool down before continuing.
I'm now considering whether to get an oil cooler .. or upgrading to a 5w-50 oil.
You say that the top end of a 40 oil is approx 130 .. but what is it for a 50 ? and would there be any concerns in using the 50 ? and if it was your car - which route would you go?
My car is MY05 2.0 STI JDM with uprated turbo and FMIC 426bhp/393lbs
Many Thanks

Hi
A good 10w-50 is fine up to about 150C, so that would be my choice for your car, then there's no need to back off when it gets hot.
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-659-10w-50.aspx
The Nanodrive CFS is, on paper, the best oil available, but the Pro S and CFS are both really good oils, so all are good choices for your car.
If the car gets a lot of road use and only a little track use, I'd go for the oil cooler and stick with a quality 5w-40 as that will give better cold start protection.
Cheers

Hi oilman, can you recommend for the following mods,
04 WRX running 346 bhp on a vf34 and usual STI mods.
I don't have the opportunity to flush the system till the weekend but noticed today the levels are low so how much would you recommend to use to get me by till the weekend?

??
Afternoon,
About to do full service on the missus car. It's a '99 Impreza STI (import), 83k on the clock and currently mapped to 320bhp. But will be going front mount when I do the service and a remap so may come to bit higher.
Mainly used as the daily workhorse but some fast road when I'm borrowing it Lol
The gearbox occasionally crunches into 4th at higher revs. From reading some of this thread the Red Line Shockproof 75w/90 is the stuff to go for when replacing the gearbox oil... And is it also OK for the diffs??
Engine oil wise what would you recommend? 10w50?
Thanks
Pez

Hi Pez
A 10w-50 is ideal for your car if it's getting hard use and these are the ones that we stock.

Yes, the Lightweight Shockproof is ideal for a crunchy box and also fine for the diff if you want to use it.

Hi Tim,
Sorry for the late reply. It's for a Zenoah 2 stroke for my FG Modellsport cars. I was using a oil call Venom or something like that?
In terms of use.....they have been sat around for almost 10 years yet added the last bit of oil I had and some Tesco Momentum and on the 4th pull it fired straight up.
Cheers
Steve
