Default Late spool up

Hello everyone,

I have what I believe is a late or long spool up. I have used the search function and found similar problems, but without any conclusion or explanation of what actually turned out to be the problem.

I expect something is worn out, as the vehicle is about 14 yrs old, it is an MY93 WRX with a TD05 as standard. Modifications are turbo back decat exhaust (2.5"), samco intercooler pipe, and 1.1bar map.

If I put my foot flat down from say 2000rpm in 5th gear, the turbo starts to spool from about 3500rpm. By about 4500rpm boost is at 1.0bar, and I don't hit full boost of 1.1bar until about 5500rpm.

Someone has suggested that the actuator may be weak, how can I check this? It doesn't appear to have any play in it. What else could it be? Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Hello fellow Bristolian, I'm moving back soon, Clevedon ish. Anyway, back on subject. I'm guessing that with you saying you should have 1.1bar the car is fitted with some sort of ECU chip. If so thats the same as my MY93. I had a similar problem with mine. You could try reading through this https://www.scoobynet.com/general-te...-question.html Scott.T was well helpful. It turned out that the boost solenoid hoses were incorrect. I bought an OE item for £27.00 from subaru and problem solved.

I have since however fitted a Dawes manual boost controller, spool is even quicker now. I did set it at 1.1bar to match the ESL chip. Worked a treat.

Hi dan, thanks for the response and info. And I never knew you were from Bristol!

I have the same chip as you from ESL. At what rpm do you hit maximum boost then?

With the dawes (I'd have to check to be sure) around 3000-3500rpm and its at full boost and then stays there. This is in 4th/5th gear at full throttle. Mine was exactly the same as yours when its was fixed without the Dawes though.

That's interesting, I wonder why the dawes makes such a difference, something to do with the boost solenoid maybe. I will have to purchase a dawes and see if it cures the problem for me too.

The Dawes totally bypasses the Boost Solenoid. Goto 3 Bar Racing---Home Page to have a look at what I bought, it arrived in a few days...

Thought I would update this thread as I have solved my late spool up problem.

I ended up doing quite a lot really, here is the list:

Ported and wrapped my headers
Installed wrapped slip jointed s/s up-pipe
Ported the turbo
Tightened loose wastegate actuator
Fitted Dawes device set to 1.1bar
Regapped spark plugs to 6mm
Cleaned MAF with brake cleaner
Blocked off std dump valve

Now the boost reaches about 1.1bar by 3500rpm, and pulls very well. Thanks for all the help.

Robin.

Just a quick question.

I asume the 1.1 bar at 3500 RPM is in 4th or 5th? How about the lower gears? I am asking because I have a hard time ever getting to 1.1 bar in 1st. Is that normal? Specs are very simular to what you descripe.

Since I fitted the Dawes device it reaches 1.0bar in 1st/2nd, a bit higher in third, and 1.1 in 4th/5th.
