I have a 1995 JDM WRX with a 2.2L closed deck fully forged engine and a P1 box. The box is making a light metallic rattle on the overun this has only just started, 3rd gear syncro is F*****d as well but has been for a year !

What would be the replacement options/cost, im using the car as a daily driver and doing 500 miles a week, the P1 box is good but the 5th is a bit short!

Would i get away with a U.K box, the engine revs to 8k and is roughly 300/300 so it will need to last!

Im tempted by the u.k for fuel economy as well, ideas greatly appreciated!
Is the final ratio in the u.k longer than the P1?

 

not 100% sure but I think there about the same !

 

Thanks mate wht's worrying me is the rattling noise coming from it on overun!

Hi Dean,
The gearbox has always had a dodgy 3rd gear synchro, what's started today is a rattling noise sound like a broken bearing, it only does it when "off throttle" coasting etc, under load it's completely normal even at 7k revs it's still fine, it only does it in 3rd 4th 5th 1st 2nd are again normal, the noise is a mettalic rattle like a broken bearing. Not sure what is going to happen in the long term with it

Sounds exactly like mine then, under load it's fine in 3rd, Just sounds like it's going to jump out @ you on overrun
Until we find an answer , I suggest no coasting in 3rd
I'll let you know if i find something out.
