Default Won't Idle.......

My car just won't idle! It back fired big time under load two weeks ago then ran like a bag of spanners, this turned out to be a split & perished induction pipe onto the turbo and a knackered MAF sensor, both of which have been replaced, as well as the radiator which was cracked and spraying a fine mist onto the induction kit. Also the spark plugs, injectors. HT leads, fuel pressure and boost controller were checked and working fine. I got the car back end of last week and it ran & idled fine but since the weekend it just won't idle so i checked the diagnostics and it showed MAF & idle control valve problems. Today i replaced the idle control valve and reset the ECU and it shows no problems on the diagnostics but it still won't idle it just keeps stalling!
Could the idle be set to low? Anyone got any ideas?

What model do you have?

I have had a maf fail in 24hrs before, so don't discount it. Sounds typical MAF problem.

Also what induction kit do you have? this could be a prime reason

It's a P1 fitted with a K&N cone filter, it ran fine before. Even ran fine a while back when i had a HKS racing suction kit fitted.

2 big causes of maf failure. There has also been a spate of '99 mafs not lasting long recently. I would think that is almost certainly your problem.

If you have the std airbox put it back on. Or if you want an induction kit the foam ones seem to be prefered, GGR and the like though I never tried one myself.

Agree with the above, mine did the same, drove ok but wouldn't idle and even stalled.

Can't refit the OE air box the FMIC pipework is in the way. I thought the K&N filters were supposed to be "MAF sensor friendly"?. I seems to idle better when the air con is on that's why i thought it might be a low idle problem?

I'm in a similar situation with my '99 typeR .I have just fitted a fmic & apexi induction kit and found that if the filter gets damp or the under bonnet temps.are high that i get poor tickover/running probs. i think the maf is running things lean and plan to construct an airbox and also switch to a map based ecu, possibly a gems or the new hydra , as the maf seems to be something of a weak link when trying to modify.
