Default Oil Light

Morning All

The oil light on my '97 Sti has started coming on when I start the car and then goes off 10 mins or so into the journey. I've done the obvious and checked the oil level (bang on) and my Greddy gauge is reading good oil pressure - if anything it looks higher than it normally would be. Am I looking at a pressure sensor on its way out, or could excessive oil pressure cause the light to come on? I've assumed that because the pressue is up and the level okay, I'm still safe to drive the car....

Cheers

I think the general concensus on here is that if the oil light comes on, its trigger is set so low that its basically informing you that your engine has already suffered damage!

The fact that your other gauge is reading good pressure and you have oil, it certainly does suggest a failing sensor.

Where is your Greddy sensor plumbed in?

It's plumbed in on the same take-off as the standard one, which is why I'm still driving the car, as I'm assuming it's a dodgy sender. My concern is whether high (excessive) pressure could cause the light to come on - whilst searching earlier, I came across a post that suggested someone had seen an increase in oil pressure just before their big ends went?! I'm seeing 7-8 bar of pressure when hot (upto 9+ when cold), although the car does have a group N pump fitted..... It just seems to be tad higher than last week......

Hi - running on 15/50 fully synthetic and the engine sounds fine, other than a very slightly tappy on the top right hand side (when looking at the engine)...
