Default Notchy gearchange

The car is an MY00 classic, regularly serviced, bought at 27000 miles and now showing 63000. Sometimes when engaging first gear when at a standstill it graunches for no apparent reason as if the clutch is not fully disengaged. I've learnt just not to bother even trying to go into first if the car is moving as then there is a very good chance of it graunching. The change from fourth to fifth is not very clever either. If the revs are kept below 4250-ish then all is well but above this changing is nearly always notchy. I've experimented by changing slower/quicker and moving the stick more/less to the right but it's always notchy when giving the car some stick. All other changes up or down the box are sweet as a nut.
What I'd like to know is if these two gremlins are unique to my car or are a characteristic of this version?
Thanks in advance
Kevin
