Unhappy Speedo fault

The speedo on the car has started to go haywire. One second it will read then nothing at all. The trip milage is not increasing either. I'm not getting a CEL and the car is not running poorly so I assume the ECU is still getting a speed signal.

Any simple checks I can make before it goes into the garage. It's an STI V so could it be the kph-mph convertor that is up the creek?

Thanks

Steve

After fitting my converter to a MY94 i found that as the cable is now a little too long (as it has been moved further back in the dash) it would come loose at gearbox end and exhibit the symptoms you mention. With the engine cold, trace the speedo cable from the bulkhead down to the gearbox, on mine it just slides over a metal tube coming up between the engine block and the bulkhead. It can be a bit fiddly if you have big hands so try and employ the services of an unsuspecting child/woman.

Hope that helps, Tony.

Sounds very much like a similar problem I had (speedo works fine for a while, then starts jumping wildly to KPH then MPH then dead.....)!

It turned out to be a sh@gged KPH->Mph convertor, these are usually found somewhere along the cable from the gearbox to the main loom - the cable from the gearbox appears in the engine bay just behind the downpipe and connects to the main loom on the bulkhead (the lambda goes to the same area of the loom).

Expect to pay about 50 to 70 quid for a new convertor.

Had a problem when I first had my STi3. Speedo was reading inconsistently low, top speed was reading about 80 iirc but car was obviously much faster. Eventually tracked the 'fault' down to poor connection of the cable drive into speedo head.

Ended up disconnecting each join and ensuring they went together as intended. Once done, it's not been a problem.

If it turns out to be that, you can get them on Ebay for £30-40.

Thanks all.

I'll have a closer look this weekend when I'm fitting my Knocklink.
