Is there any point in just having an AFR guage. I.e. If it shows a bad mixture, there isn't alot you can do about it. If you say that the mixture problems are the result of other factors which should be remedied why then would you have an AFR controller which wouldn't necessarily cure the problem only hide it for a bit. Also, isn't the knocklinks purpose to detect detonation which is primarily caused by lean fueling. Just wanted some opinions as I'm getting a knocklink but have read that alot of people have controllers or guages. Cheers Olly

Lambdalink and Knocklink are mainly visual aids for safety (Early Warning System). Lean fuel mixtures do cause DET but this is one of a few causes, at least with some visual display preventative measures can be taken before any serious damage is caused. The standard ECU's are quite knock tolerant meaning that that they will allow a reasonable amount to occur before taking any action.
You referred to gauges and controllers, please elaborate

Cheers

Knock can be caused by a number of factors, not just lean mixture. I've monitored knock on my own car just by swapping between Optimax and BP Ultimate. It also shows up with even a dodgy batch from the same garage.

I would personally say it's good to have both.

What I mean about guages or controllers is that one simply tells you there is a problem. i.e Dawes AFR meter. and the other allows you to make adjustments to the fuelling as well as a visual guage.i.e. Apexi SAFC. Why wouldn,t you always have a controller if it can fix problems shown up by its guage? Just had a thought, how is the fuelling adjusted on standard cars? i.e. no ecu mods.

The Apexi SAFC does not display AFR but only correction values, it actually modifies the MAF's output voltage by taking into account throttle position and RPM signal thus the ecu then adjusts the fuelling to suit (I have one of these which I am gonna sell)
On a standard ECU the Fuelling is determined by a number of factors, Mass Air Flow, Air Temperature, Engine Load, Throttle Position, RPM, Fuel Map, lambda sensor output etc.

Cheers
