Question

UK, MY98. Leaking a pint of water every 2 weeks. When it is heating up i.e. in the mornings, there is a strange smell (like coolant on a hot surface)and there is a quiet screech, the same as a loose fan belt. Could the water pump be leaking fluid on to the fan belt causing it to squeak? Has anyone else had a similair problem. The car got a new radiator supplied and fitted by Subaru about 3 - 4 months ago. Car is fine once warmed up fully and everything else is minted.

Could be the water pump seal, or a leak from the sealing compound its stuck onto the front of the block with. Unfortunately without removing the cam cover, you wont really be able to tell without further investigation.

Jack car up and whip the undertray off, can`t remember exactly where the water pump is, somewhere just below the cam or fan belt i think, but if you can see a white, crusty sort of residue somewhere under there then your water pumps leaking. (thats what happened with mine anyway, dealer showed me)
