Hi All,

Has anyone experienced problem filling up their car with fuel. Everytime i try and fill up the fuel has to go in very, very slowly otherwise the pump cuts out.

This happens mainly on ESSO super unleaded pumps but I have also had the same problem at Shell stations.

It really difficult to fill the car up in less than ten minutes. Plus people keep giving me "does he know how to use a petrol pump" looks.

On several occasions the pump has actually cut off because its been out of the holder to long.

Any help will be much appreciated

Cheers

Chris P

I have exactly the same problem with MY99 Turbo. The pump cuts out when filling up, especially for the first 10 litres or so. It usually then runs OK until the tank becomes full. I think it must have something to do with the fact that air doesn't escape properly from the tank when filling up.

Hold the pump handle at a 45 degree angle i.e at 9 O'clock.

Try not to use Shell or Esso their environmental record stinks!

The other solution is to hold the nozzle a little out from it's full insertion.

This should really be in the FAQ, if it isn't already, as every new owner seems to hit this problem.

As luther says 9 O'clock does the trick (although rotatating clockwise this is 90 degrees from the normal position).

Well I held the nozzle at 9 o'clock and was finally thrown off the forecourt by an irate manager at 10.30. (Yes, I am sad but couldn't resist that one ) I just jiggle the thing around until I find a happy position - 12 o'clock seems to work on Tesco pumps. By the way, SUL is getting bloody expensive these days at nigh on 90 pence a bloody litre. If I didn't like driving the beast so much I'd chuck standard UL in her again just so's I can afford to go on holiday once a year!

Dobbo.

I'd think twice at that price, but BP garages in my district sell it @ 79.9p per litre (about 10p more than UL).

Since I get better fuel consumption (although this is my perception) I wouldn't use anything since being 'converted'

Hi Guys,
Just a thank you for all the info. I filled up yesterday in less than 2 minutes by turning the pump as instructed. I am WELL impressed with the knowledge of the people on here.

Cheers,

Chris P

New MY99 arrived Friday (with a *full* tank of petrol ) and first fill up was today. Put the nozzle in and it the fuel cut-off clicked straight away. Remembered the advice here and rotated the nozzle...no problem whatsoever. Thanks for the advice, folks, most useful

Same here guys.

Put the nozzle in thought "Hmmm doesn't go in that far" and then remembered the advice here.

The nozzle then went in with a reassuring clunk.
