WRX Hawkeye Remap/Turbo questions
Hi guys
I know this question has been asked numerous times in past but I want to make absolute sure I'm doing everything right as this will be my first car that's ever going in for remap.
My car is an 07 hawkeye WRX. Engine wise all standard besides a forge dumpvalve, Afterburner raptor backbox, scoobyworld straight through centre exhaust and a cosworth panel filter in stock airbox.
Over past few weeks I have bought the following:
Walbro 255 fuel pump
Japspeed 3">2.5" decat downpipe.
I'm wanting to aim for about 300bhp but I understand with these parts and the stock TD04 turbo will get me around 280bhp.
I spoke to a local turbo company about possibly finding a TD05 turbo (as recommended on previous threads I searched) but they can't get hold of one. The chap I spoke to said he can upgrade the TD04 by putting in a bigger billet wheel I think? he said it will deliver more power and spool up much quicker even than the TD05. They quoted £300 which is bit too much for me.
Does anyone have the correct part number for the TD05-16G as I've seen loads on ebay and amazon, all sorts of different variations but I'm just not sure which is the correct one? Also some mention right angle/side turbo etc??

Too much money and I don't need to go upto 350ish bhp, 300 will be more than enough for my daily use. (No track days) Also, I think I'd rather buy a new one if possible, rather than used.

Why don't you use the search bar ? A vf35 will make over 300 bhp. You said you wanted 300 ? A td04 hybrid will make 310 to 320 ISH with great spool up . A vf35 won't be laggy but you said you wanted new ? Spool up on a 2.5 with a vf35 will be good . It will also be good with a 43/48 vf34 vf28

Getting closer and closer to remap time, still very undecided on what to do.Do I stick to a basic remap with my decat/fuel pump and be content with 280ish bhp or do I get a VF35 added in for another £300!!! If money wasn’t an issue no doubt I’d go with the bigger turbo but just had full cambelt done last week which cost £400 so not sure what to do really

Go with the vf35, 43 or 48. You can pick one up for less than £300. Don't bother with the td04 as you'll only want to upgrade it in a few months. The 2.5 wrx transmission will take the torque but you'll have to be ready for the possibility of the pistons going. You can mitigate against this by not going wild on the boost, 1.35bar (20psi) rings a bell as the safe limit on standard internals. You'll still have a car that'll pick its feet up nicely.

Hi Discover, a standard Wrx Hawk will run at about 220hp. With the mods you’ve done already as said you should get about 280hp safe. That’s a big hike in hip. The next upgrade is suspension followed by brakes believe me! I did the same 6or 7 years ago on an 07 hawk, as soon as I had 284hp I had to upgrade suspension , coilovers, arbs etc then not long after fit full set of Brembo’s. The car was an awesome road car with virtually no lag. A year or so later I fitted a re-furbished and tweeked vf43 , after mapping it made 355/360. At this power and torque the 5speed box can be a problem, depending on how you drive, anyway, the car was pretty quick but not as nice to drive around the lanes due to the turbo lag, as it was before. Just be aware that hp isn’t everything.

I agree regarding the suspension and brakes (although grooved disks and decent pads should suffice) but the lag on a VF48 isn't that bad particularly if you still have a top mount inter-cooler. The transmission in the wrx Hawk, I believe, is good enough for the torque (probably better than a forged engine). My head gasket went with the standard (remapped) TD04 in, so I forged the engine whilst it was out of the car. If the engine is standard - I'd still be inclined to stick with the standard TD04 rather than risk head gasket / ringland failure.

This is my only/daily car so can't afford anything blowing as such. Even after the Remap still need it to be reliable.
I mean I don't really drive the car hard as I use it for work and back, every now and then I might redline it through every gear but that is quiet rare.
I'm not chasing big numbers in bhp as such but I would be happy with 300hp.
Can the mapper map it so power wise he's not pushing everything to within an inch of its life?

In that case, you may want to stick with the TD04 and get a second hand prodrive sports cat, a fuel pump and decent panel filter (all less than £400). Remap at circa £350 and you're at 280 bhp with a good increase in torque.
When you get the sports cat, ensure that you get both parts of the down pipe or the cat alone won't fit.

I've already got a japspeed full decat and walbro 255 fuel pump. just need to buy a fuel filter but pricey at £90 but it will have to be done as its still running the factory one.
But as you said earlier, if I leave the stock turbo, I may feel an urge to upgrade it anyway lol.

Also, not sure I'd bother with the decat downpipe at those levels... It's a pain in the rear come mot time, and probably will not buy you much in terms of hp at the 280 level, so seems a bit pointless (I'd stick with a standard downpipe personally).
If it's a daily, you could just have it remapped as is (well, maybe change the fuel pump, and change to a better drop-in air filter), and see close to 280 hp, for not a lot of outlay. Once you start adding a different turbo etc etc, costs add up quickly.

Hi thanks for the support. Thing is, I’ve already got the decat pipe, fuel pump and cosworth panel filter. All I need is a fuel filter really so might as well get those fitted. I was told on a stock car, a remap without any other mods would see around 260bhp but because of the decat it would get around 280bhp.I’ve had the decat for a couple months so I’m thinking may as well have it fitted knowing I’ll never have an issue come MOT time as my mate has his own MOT place.
The one thing worth mentioning is that it's not a fuel filter you need, it's a fuel pump, but it sounds like you're in good hands with the advice from your tuner/garage already
Let us know how the car drives after a remap etc!

Spending all that money for an extra 20bhp and then winding it back for the safety of the engine makes no sense.
Also are you driving the car with all those mods on in mapped.

The fuel filter for the Hawk is in the fuel tank, it is a git of a job. You can buy pass it and install one under the bonnet like the blob/bug. It'll be easier then on future changes

I was told that with a decat and panel filter it will reach around 280hp and much more torque.
the only aftermarket parts on the car currently is a panel filter and exhaust system. The decat and fuel pump are not fitted yet, the plan was to have them fitted when its getting mapped.
What I was asking was, is the OEM fuel filter (which sits in the tank) will it work with the walbro 255 fuel pump or is the filter for the walbro pump different?
