Came back from holiday to a drip leak on the bottom edge of the off side rocker cover and noticed that there is a small half circle piece that has been pushed inside the rocker cover.
Can anyone tell me what the purpose of this small half circular piece is??
It’s merely an oil seal. So it’s purpose is just that. Completing the cast shape of the head to keep the oil in the engine ��

Or you can get aluminium inserts to replace them of the likes of iag
Don’t forget to put gasket sealant in the marked areas otherwise it will leak worse than before you started, ive seen it happen many times, they’re notorious
Threebond is what Subaru recommend, and what I see most engine builders using on reassembly.
To be on the safe side could I put the sealant all the way round??

Only put it where shown horrible stuff blocks oil pick ups and everything. The actual half moon/circular bit is where its most needed and a bit over the front cam carrier. Use sparingly cause it only squeezes out inside and out.
The gaskets and sealant have turned up so I’ll have a go at it this weekend. It may be a daft question but, where marked do i put the sealant on the cam cover then seat the gasket and put some of the sealant on the gasket too before re-fitting i.e sealant on both sides of the gasket?
Sealant on the head. The gaskets push into a recess around the inside of the cover.
Driver's side is slightly easier - just need to remove the airbox housing. Passenger side requires the battery and washer bottle to be removed. Some of the bolts are easier to get to underneath. Don't over tighten them. Long flexible head ratchet spanners are a big help.
As said can't stress enough do not over tighten the bolts !! The metal is soft and you will knacker the threads which would be a major nightmare. Be careful!

I think i may done just that with the timing belt tensioner as the bolt wont torque up properly.
Or you could use a a helicoil or time sert, i prefer to change the bracket then you know the thread is good. Nothing at all wrong with “correctly fitted” helicoils or time serts but why take the risk an such an important part, saving pennies won’t seem very frugal if you end up with the belt slipping.
yes fairly simple job and just make sure the gasket is seated correctly when putting the rocker cover back on as when i put mine back on the gasket corner caught on the block and just misaligned it a little bit,put it back together and leaked oil everywhere lol.. also I use gasket sealant all over the gasket for extra seal pooowwwwaa
