Default Km to miles mileage conversion - room for confusion?

i was thinking about the whole converting kilometres to miles for odometer and thinking - what actually stops someone changing from kilometres to miles and then staring in an advert that car is still on original kilometres?
I have an sti v3 and been told car is still on kilometres but it does make me think what is car was converted to miles a few years ago and mileage is actually miles not kilometres. Just a thought - not sure how easy it is to change mileage on these older cars and if any company converting it has a duty to inform dvla of change?

Thanks!

If it's been in the uk a while, then you've got .gov mot checker and possible service history to back up travelled distance during periods, the rest is down to individuals in terms of honesty. Some people pay for the car conversion service with a certificate to prove.
