Default Immobiliser problem

My 2004 wrx refused to unlock using the fob the other day and then refused to disengage the immobiliser to start. The fob is working fine (been tested) so assuming its the alarm brain I put it into the dealer to get fixed (reluctantly). They have agreed with whats wrong but say the part is no longer available to fix it, odd on a 2004 car I thought.
They didn't charge me either and although they didn't fix it I was all ready to argue as I thought they would try.
So I now have to either replace the part that's broken or fit a new immobiliser. The questions I have are, where is the unit situated and is it easy to get rid of it? Will a secondhand unit from a breakers do the job? If its a totally new immobiliser that's needed any idea what I would expect to pay to have the old one disconnected and new one installed?

I have a sigma alarm and matching fob that you should be able to plug and play. On that year car it should be behind your glovebox inside a metal box bolted on the left hand side.
