Hi everyone i'm new to subaru's, bought an 03 wrx a few months ago, hope someone can help with my problem and i hope i'm posting in the right area.

A week or so ago i was driving my car, put my foot down quite hard on the motorway like you do, maybe a little to hard it seems, at high revs i got a burning smell so backed off, got home to discover a ticking noise from the engine, its there at cold start and maybe worse when hot.

I'm thinking i maybe bent a valve? but would that cause a bad smell?

Any help would be really appreciated at this point as i'm worried about driving it in case i totally kill it.

Also does anyone know anyone that knows what there doing in the kettering area as i'm new here and don't just want to walk into any old garage.

Bent valve and it would be running like a bag o crap.
Would more than likely be the clutch or sticky calliper or something like that .

What makes you say bent valve?

Is the car still running ok?

Can't help with the Kettering area sorry, but there are some on here from that neck of the woods

Car is running fine just a horrible ticking, and bad burning smell under load, valve was just an idea because of sound.

Defo not a valve then pal if running sweet.

30 mph in 5 th gear and floor the throttle, this will show up any slippage in the clutch.

Ticking sound could well be just heat shields and other components cooling down

my car made i wierd ticking noise about a year ago turned out to be boost solenoid valve. sounded like bottom end when i was driving

The noise is there on cold start and seems worse when hot, will try the clutch in 5th but this sound wasn't there till after i booted it that night and got the bad smell.
Cant hear the noise while driving at all.

To be honest mate, your never gonna get a decent diagnosis over the Internet without hearing the problem, or even smelling it, sometimes the smell gives the game away straight away

My only suggestion would be to get hold of someone local who knows what their talking about.

Off the top of my head there's only one fella on here that I am aware of from your area.

Try a pm to tubby tommy, very nice chap, if he can't help then I'm sure he can point you in the right direction
