Default Which ecu? Classic scooby

Hi guys,

just bought a japan import scooby wagon running yellow injectors, tdo5 turbo, straight through exhaust, wahlbro fuel pump, big front mount intercooler, equal length headers etc. When I collected it i was told it was 350bhp (don't know how true that is) on a Z4 ecu but the ecu had been removed due to being faulty and a standard ecu was fitted so it still drives. It's running very rich currently and only boosts 0.6 bar of boost.

as I'm new to the Subaru scene I was just wondering what ecu people would recommend to buy? Or could I chip the current ecu?

Thank you in advance.

Will the ESL work with any ecu? Or are they a replacement motherboard?

92-98
It's a daughterboard that gives you control of the mapping and retains the oem system.
Fits inside your ecu.

it wouldnt of been 350 bhp on a Z4 typical sales pish , what "standard" ECU is it running now ?
0.6 is actuator pressure so either some plumbing is done wrong or there is more at fault.

so does it plug into the standard ecu motherboard or is it a completely new board?

Sorry for all all the questions.

Yes plugs in or in some it's soldered.
If you go onto the website all the pdf's are there with instructions on fitting and user manual if you fancy diy mapping

As mine is a 1994 model would I be able to get the motorsport upgrade as it only lists 97/98 on their website?

You have an old ESL board in there already, Non mappable tho.

A new v2.0 board would replace your existing esl board and is mappable

no motorsport on the pre 97 models

Looks like you have a later spec ECU there tho as that looks like a 97 > esl board

The ecu above isn't mine.
could I buy a later ecu and get buy the daughter board with the motorsport extra and fit it to my 94 Subaru or are they not interchangeable?

Buy direct from ESL or a mapper.
The board in the pic above is 97/98 and is mappable.
The 97/98 ecu is 3 plug and your 94 is 4 plug.
Not interchangeable and no motorsport pack available for the 92-96 early 4 plug ecu.

Link G4+ would be my choice, best support around, heavily featured and not expensive when you factor in what it'll do that an ESL won't.

Interesting Martyn.
Can you run avcs on the G4+ on a GC8?
What else can it do that ESL doesn't?
Is the knock control as good as oem?
Does the Link G4+ use it's own sensors?
Genuainly interested as I might go avcs and unfortunately ESL doesn't support this.

Link G4+ gets my vote too.

avcs compatible
launch
anti lag
flat shift
switchable maps
full wideband control with either an external wideband or via can with a canbus wideband from link etc.
closed loop idle
closed loop boost
boost by gear etc etc etc

the list goes on

Thanks Tim
One to consider for my v3 currently running ESL with motorsport pack.
At almost 3 times the price of ESL and even more if extra sensors are needed, might be overkill on my road car?
I'm running twinscroll and am pretty sure avcs would be good for my set-up.
Link G4+ is one I never considered but seems well worth thinking about

I have ordered a Link G4+ trough Enginetuner. I'm ditching the Alcatek because of crappy support and to be honest Syvecs is pretty much as bad here in Sweden with basically one mapper supporting it. Link is really big worldwide so no issues what so ever finding a mapper supporting it.

I know,I'm tempted
If you add the price if data cable and motorsport pack, even with the discount, the link works out at less than 100£ !
Link has some great features by the looks of it.
I might just try sell my esl for £500 too

Ha yeah you are lucky with the added extra additonal M/S pack to bump your value up

i reckon i could get £360 for my ESL/Cable as new its like £420 i think.

but hey, we can dream tho lol

With the Link G4 is it self mappable as you buy it ? or do you need extra cabling and licensing etc ? always get the feeling with these products you get suckered in then need to buy this cable, this part, this bit etc to get what you want.

so for me id like the ecu, antilag etc but i bet you need to pay extra ?
