Is it safe to drive a modified car gently (off boost) for a short while before mapping?

I'll be picking up my 05 WRX PPP this week having been fitted with a hybrid TD04 and the usual set of supporting mods. It'll be getting mapped in a couple of weeks.

I've got a 20 mile drive back from the garage and a then a 55 mile trip to the mapping session. Assuming stay off boost, avoid motorways and drive with a very light right foot will I be okay to drive the car these distances or is it time to start looking at towing it?

It'll be mapped on the road so I won't know right away. Mapper might be able to give an estimate. I am curious though so it'll be going on the rollers eventually.

I'll put up a project thread once everything's sorted out.

Think hybrid td04 is around 500 all in as Craig is known on subaru Facebook pages for his turbo rebuild/upgrades

Update on this. Drove the car home today keeping it off boost and had no issues, ran fine.

One comment from the garage was that when they tested it it was sputtering a bit on boost. Is this normal for a car that's yet to be mapped or does it indicate an issue to sort out before mapping?

So the garage that fitted the turbo took it for a drive around on boost after they fitted the turbo? Before it was mapped? Good grief.


It's normal to put your foot down just a little to ensure the turbo is actually spinning up and making boost after fitting a turbo but it will drive like a pig until it's been mapped. Could be over-boosting and all sorts.


Fingers crossed they haven't connected all the boost solenoid pipes incorrectly.


Were they a Subaru specialist?

They should of kept it off boost if poss till its been mapped like you did driving it home

Like BPR said, who done the work, they would surely know not to get it boosting before its been mapped

Cheers for responses guys. My undstanding is that they didn't boot it but just made sure everything was working properly and noted a bit of hesitancy. They're not Scooby specialists but have a lot of experience in performance cars. I'm confident they didn't give it death having just fitted the turbo.

As I understand this is exactly what they did. I've dealt with them for years and they've been spot on. They're no strangers to turbo cars and performance cars so I'm not worried. Apologies if my wording made it sound like they had booted it.

Thats ok then, better to be safe then sorry hey Liam so keep it off boost till the remap, had to drive mine 50 miles �� from extreme then another 60 miles up to norwich for its remap, possible the most boring 100 plus miles of my life lol but had to be done hey

Same mate, got a 70ish mile drive to the mapping session, I'm expecting to be overtaken by HGVs.

All be worth it once you get to drive it for the first time after the mapping session, be grinning from ear to ear remember to post up dyno graphs coz be interesting to see what the hybrid makes

No doubt about it. I'm even looking forward to the mapping session itself. I'm a bit of a geek when it comes to these things so quite keen to see what goes on and how it all works. I'll have it on the dyno first chance I get

Don't worry too much as mentioned just keep it off boost, PPP map is known for being quite rich so as long as you stay under 3k rpm you should be fine.

I think you should drive everywhere under 1krpm just to be safe!
