Be a struggle on the standard injectors and tmic, unless they've been changed

You don't need a 'new ecu'. ESL board fitted into your current ecu is the way to go.

out of interest, what did the clinic advise ??

44Occ injectors, uprated fuel pump, upgrade the slanty intercooler with an esl map and you have your potential 300bhp.
Early ECUs are not mappable, you need to fit a daughter board or complete after market ecu that allows the mapper to do his stuff. I found the ESL board the most cost effective way of mapping my early MY96 car.

If your car has grey 380cc injectors and lets say for instance you replaced them with 440cc items it will probably run like a dog (mine did) without a tweak to the map, Hence the ESL board and map changes are needed.

Is the esl daughter board possible to fit on a v5 sti, also where would be the best place to purchase one
I was told the standard ecu can be remapped on the v5 onwards

We are close to a solution but it isn't a board, it's a firmware update. You can currently map the v5 using ecutek.

There's no power limit on any ECU, you can run 1000+bhp on any of them with the right supporting mods.

The reason it's bad advice is that if someone follows it they will spend more to get less.

I think Andy just meant that the Apexi doesn't offer great value for money anymore. They still demand a high price and in reality are very basic. You're still looking at £300 plus mapping for one which is what the ESL costs, it just doesn't make sense to go with the apexi.
