Thumbs down uk 2002 gearbox blown

hi there everyone im new to this site after searching for gearbox information about my 2002 uk wrx subaru i found this... now i took the gearbox out yesterday to find that it has stripped a couple of gears (after banging it into 2nd gear i heard an explosion and lost drive) whoops, now the box removed was a 77-TY754VN2AA , i had a classic k reg import before which i replaced 3 gearbox's which diddnt last too long as i later found out u have to get the right one to match the rear diff... just wondering if anyone has a box that will fit mine or knows if any other box will be compatible without swapping diff over ect, cheers guys

Default box

yeah think im going to stick with the 5 speed, give it another chance, only thing with buying a second hand box is you 90% know its been abused and had a hard life a rebuild is an option but just want it up and running really

if you keep killing box's then your just gonna kil another, as said if you wanna keep the 5 speed then your only option is ppg set or similar

2nd and 3rd gear is where most pressure is put on the box, its the most commonly used gears so suffers more wear and tear

i have a 95 with a 02 box just had it rebuilt at cleckheaton gearbox with new clutch fitted cost 960.
came with 12k or 12month warranty so for state of mind i wouldnt buy 2nd hand!
i did look at 2nd hand but found people were after 4-500 for each box???
take off 250 for the clutch and i didnt get dirty i know what i would do!!

still pi55e5 me off that they keep going though

they are a great bunch of lads and will do a good job. i wouldn't take mine anywhere else

if you bought it from a trader, and is only 5/6 years old, you still have some way to claim recompense. Obviously it depends on whether you have had it modded or changed etc, but i had the same problem. Mine is 53 plate MY03, done 56k, and 2nd just stopped engaging. Wrote to the trader, who has sourced one from Subaru themselves, given 12 mth warranty and is fitting it free. Just because its out of warranty doesnt mean these ****ty gearboxes can give up and we have to foot the bill.
