Default oh dear - stuck in reverse!

having a mare! '93 wrx

for a while I've been having a problem with the car sometimes sticking in reverse gear! - but as long as there was room behind the car, then clutch up and down and rattling gear stick it would come out again.

and also it won't go straight into fifth gear! push stick in direction of fifth 2 or 3 times and it would go in ok (not forcing)

I backed the car into the garage before and again it was stuck in reverse, so I did the usuall clutch and jiggle but was getting very close to the wall, until it got to the point that I couldn't go back anymore! - Stuck!

So, got a bit angry (as you do) and jiggled and forced the stick for a bit then it popped out - or so I thought!

the car is now stuck in reverse!
the gearstick feels like it's in neutral - but will not select/deselect any gear
wiggling stick now and I can feel the reverse gear still (so I'm guessing selector hasn't come off)

Is it likely to have slipped maybe?
is it possible I've broke something inside box?

Help!

cheers
Mark.
