Question Help for a newbie

Hi guys,

Hope you can help. A few questions from a new owner

I have recently purchased a 1995 WRX that has had a fair amount of engine work completed by the PO.

Last year (about 7k miles ago) it had an engine rebuild - new crank, rod, uprated oil pump, shells, Modeen (whats this?) at John Pye Motors at a cost of £1700. It is currently running a full Magnex Decat exhaust, K&N Induction Kit, re-programmed ECU and has a bltz dual turbo timer and Pivot air/fuel controller.

The car runs very well and is pretty quick by any standards. When hot the engine is quiet and idles, picks up and runs hard with no problems. It does not use any oil (apart for a small leak from an electronic oil gauge take off at the top of the engine) and runs 100psi on the gauge as soon as the throttle is blipped - tickover registers 40 ish - 60ish - hard to be precise as the needle swings around a bit.

However, when cold and if left for a few days, just after start up and for the first minute or so there is a knocking sound from the engine. It does not sound as heavy as big ends (I spoke with John Pye who thought it might be piston slap) and gradually goes as the engine warms.

I had an experienced owner (and qualified mechanic) listen to the car when it was warm and he said it seemed fine, ticking over as he would expect with no smoke or strange noises. So...any thoughts anyone. BTW, she's running on Silkolene-Pro 15w50 oil.

Also, oil levels. Is there any specil way to check the engine and gearbox oil levels; you'll have to forgive this, I had to check the engine oil on my last car with the engine running!

Oh, and what should I expect from a tank full of fuel (I use BP Ultima Unleaded) on mixed driving...seem to be using a lot of fuel!!

Also, what should the tyre pressures be? it's lowered and running on 17" wheels shod with 205/40 tyres

Thanks in advance.

For your engine oil level, wait until your engine's cool and pull the dipstick out, don't mean to state the obvious. Not sure about the gearbox oil tho, don't think you can check the level. As for fuel, mines a firsty fooka too, only had it 6-8 weeks and filled it up about 20-25 times , hope thats any help

Thanks,

I had a 911 and that was a check oil whilst running car, never had a japanese car beforeso just wanted to make sure.....

Fuel tank is only £42'ish from empty to full... the 911 took about £90 worth and that lasted about 300 miles...so I guess it's just a case of getting used to it.
