1997 Type r
Will be buying a 1997 type r sti already thinking of mods.........At the mo it has Straight thru exhaust blitz air filter coil overs.Question is how far will a top mount go (bhp)Would a bigger scoop help with more air rather than buying a fmic.Understand that after certain amount of bhp i will need a fmic then bigger turbo etc....but as a start what will this acheive?Does the water spray help. Also what turbo is on these cars and what boost will it hold?

Start with the basics, brakes, knocklink and get use to the power the car has, 280ps is quite a bit and can catch you out quickly if you dont watch out.
You have to remember that the STi Type R doesnt have ABS and you have the DCCD, just these 2 factors alone can cause you problems if you havnt gotten use to them.
Modifying though, i take it the car is a version 4?
So you cannot remap the ecu, you will have to go for an aftermarket one, id also like to know what sort of fuel the cars been run on since its been in the uk (can you find out?) as STi's are quite tempremental to the incorrect level of octane (plus the decat wont have helped if its been on the wrong grade).
As i said, start with the basics and get use to the car first, then think about where to go after that.

Did any of these have ABS......the type r,s are known to swap ends and catch the newer owners out until they get used to the dccd and the lack of ABS.I think you will find there,s a bit more to it than just steering into a slide with this particular model...........

Now I'm a little more used to it I'm not as much of a danger but these cars defo need a health dose of respect or they'll bite you big time. This is not a criticism of these cars, mearly a result of them being more focused.

TMIC is a limitation and the research ive done tells me that the STi8 TMIC and bigger scoop is the only one worth looking at. Hard to fit though so I'm going FMIC. Waterspray does drop charge temps but doens't do anything for the capacity obviously.
Standard TMIC will cope with mods such as filter full decat and headers, but starts being a limiting factor soon after.
Turbo will be good for around 320 bhp, VF34 or TD05's are popular at the mo and can get you into the high 300's. You would then need a bigger pump, 550 injectors, FMIC etc...
Standard boost is around 16 psi from memory.
