Default Loosing 5th

Anyone any idea what would cause a MY00 (50000 miles) to drop out of 5th gear? Happens on over-run only - just changes to neutral all by itself. Also gear lever moves about 1cm acceleration vs decceleration but only in 5th.

As northants says Graham, sounds very like the mainshaft retaining nut. Fixing it ASAP would be a good move; the longer you leave it the bigger the repair bill will be.

Here we go again. Mine went last year, as GM says get it fixed ASAP, or it will cause further damage. I did mine myself with the box in situ, but I wouldn't attempt it unless your fairly confident with the spanners.
