Hi mates,

Anybody knows when does the ECU switches IC water spray on latest STi versions ?
I have noticed IC water tank level goes down pretty fast during track sessions, I was wondering if it was based on intake temp, charge, both of them ?

Cheers from hot south France

It's manual so the level goes down when you press the button

Its not just manual, it's automatic when it needs it according to Mike Wood who I would be inclined to believe.

Don't know what conditions trigger the auto spray through, so can't help you.

Question

Isnt the Jap Spec STi 7&8 auto and the lowly UK and OZ specs are manual only?

If it (UK Sti 7 PPP) is not auto then the evporation though a sealed bottle is quite frankly stunning - especially in warm weather when the intake air temp. is high!

Mine goes down even when I don't press the button....
Suspect it is also auto.

Noticed it particularly at the Ring when the low light came on and I hadn't pressed the button once

It certainly was auto on the pre Fugley STi's. When you manually press the button, the noise the pump makes from the boot is un-mistakable and I've never heard the pump without manually pressing the button.

Also, my water has not gone down since I got the car....

From the OZ STi 7 Technical Specifications:

"The STi intercooler due to the increased boost pressure and power output has a significantly bigger cooling capacity than the
standard WRX to cope with additional heat load. It is also equipped with a manually operated water spray which can be operated by the
driver in 2 second bursts to provide additional cooling under high engine load or high ambient temperatures."

So either the Type UK is different or the PPP does something special?

All I know it that I very rarely press the button, but the water level goes down.

Mike Wood said that it was automatic and would spray when required

Matt, yes the spray motor noise is very noticable when you are not driving hard or stopped etc, but honestly would you still hear it when making steady progress? - Doubt if I would, and thats probably when the spray is likely to come on.

Amazing that this question is here un answered, my UK STI7 PPP bottle does seem to go down of its own accord, perhaps it just dribbles out! who know?. Any techie really know. Did Mike Wood actually post here that the PPP automatically uses the spray, it would be nice to know.

Its definatly AUTOMATIC (the manual button is there for you to give an extra shot to make u feel good & Mike Wood has confirmed this as well.

When the water level gets below a certain level the i/c water light comes on on the dashboard when it is using water to remind u to fill up. Mine did this today and was on a lot (no wonder I have filled up with petrol 4 times this week (in 550 miles ) must be having fun )

cheers simon

Mike's comments were for STi8 he didn't mention STi7. My STi7 has the original OEM water in. I'm 99% certain the STi7 is manual only. Either that or I need to give it a lot more stick.

The Japanese cars as we know auto + manual. You can turn it off too (obviously, that means if it is not set to auto, it won't spray...).

On my m8'S STi7, you can just hear the relay kick in when you give some sctick

The intercooler water spray does not have any ECM control
it is a simple circuit controlled by the manual push switch and a water spray timer which receives its power feed from only the switch . Hope this helps

Hi mates,

To make long discussion short, please consider the following :
I've gone with a friend of mine for a track week-end in Ledenon (famous south france track) 2 or 3 weeks ago. I was driving his STi 7 Prodrive, I was with my STi 8.

On Saturday morning, we both fullfilled the aft tanks (both std).
We burnt 2 sets of tyres over the week end, external temp was showing around 30-32°C...

I never pressed the button (better keep hands on the wheel there), but we discovered both thanks were empty on Sunday afternoon, with absolutely no leak in my car (stripped interior).

So, please do not debate about this.
It IS capable to auto spray on both versions!
I am just curious to know some more cause I didn't found anything about it anywhere... ???

Cheers,
Gérald

It is auto, but obviously only comes in when needed, it is very debatable it will be activated during road use unless you are REALLY giving it some in which case tell me where you are and i'll try and avoid that area

Scoobycar,

We don't necessary have to go through a STi 7 PPP Wiring Diagram as I'm talking about standard french spec STi 7 and 8 (further than that, both ECU monitoring is showing "type UK").

Cheers

Cheers STi M'8 nothing like proving it in the real world

If anybody has an STi 7 or 8 Wiring diagram, it should be easy to spot the "hot" wire out !

How about a simple warning light (or LED) perhaps rigged up temporarily to see when the pump is activated. Would even be useful if it was permanent I reckon. Might have a go myself.

Right then. sorry to bring this back up.

Did anyone manage to hook up a 'bulb' to see if it actually does come on automatically ?

did anyone get a wiring diagram ?

would be really interested to know.
