TD05/TD04 Hybrid

Anyone ever perfomed this hybrid? I have the US WRX with the TD04L and I would like a way to cheaply increase the flow until I can afford a better turbo.

What is the shaft size differnce between the TD04 and a TD05, big 16g.

It's a waste of time imho - the td04 exhaust is too small. Buy yourself a td05 - *very* cheap in USA!

Hi Rex.

I have a TD04L Hybrid from Mark (posts as R19KET on here) at www.lateralperformance.co.uk 500GBP for an exchange unit = bargain I also have a full de-cat exhaust and ECU-Tek3 remap, amongst other things.

I'm delighted with it on my UK00 car. It goes just like the ordinary turbo at low rpm, hits 1 bar of boost at 2,700rpm and is blowing 1.3 bar by 3,100. It's very strong in the mid-range and is still pulling hard at 6,000

There's loads of debate about the TD05 on another thread here "Question of Power". Mail John Banks about it as he has used both.

My simplistic view of it is this: if you like the way your car goes now with quick spool-up and smooth, strong bottom-end power, but you just want more, the TD04L hybrid is perfect. The TD05 and others will push harder (a lot harder) but will change the way the car drives and take you to a whole new level of performance and expense

Strongly recommend a remap to make the most of this, or any other performance mods. John Banks can also help you here and, because of his experience with this turbo, might be able to do something for you by post. Drop him an email.

Where does the TD05 start to spool and hit full power etc? My car feels like it picks up around 2000 and is full power by 3000.

With the AWD it's a nightmare to accelerate off-boost cos you can't slip the wheels without giving dogs abuse to the clutch so for standing starts (I mean normal driving in busy traffic etc) I don't think I'd like to move the pickup threshold up much or it will be hopeless moving off then suddenly start flying which isn't ideal for trying to get out of busy junctions!

Any comments on the TD05 in this respect - can the spool of it be improved with Dawes/Decat/remap/3-port solenoid etc?

Paul, good questions!

Some of the answers will come out of the group dyno runs being done this weekend. Next week should be interesting in Drivetrain, if peeps can calm down and speak up honestly 2003 is the year when big-power UK Scoobs are outed.

But I think that real answer to our dreams is a turbo-diesel that revs to 7k. Fat chance! Until then, we just have to pick the best compromise that suits our personal driving style.

Thanks Hoppy!

This car is a daily driver so I would like to keep the spool up time to a minimum, hence the hybrid. I know to some extent I'll be choked on the high end, but I don't spend much time there right now anyway. Did you have to upgrade the fuel system after instillation, or did it have enough juice left. Anyone know of a good supplier of turbo parts in the US?

Paul, if you want to have a ride in my car see me quick because I don't know how much longer I'll have the TD05 on the car as going bigger, but the low end torque is good. I get 14.5 PSI or 1 bar at 2700 RPM in 5th, 2900 RPM in 4th (neither held back on the brakes) and full boost of 1.5 bar arrives very shortly afterwards, there is a nice wide power band from 3000-7000 RPM. Having tried TD04, TD04 hybrid, MD304 and TD05 and seen a TD05/06 hybrid in action quite a bit on the road and on the rollers now too, I think the TD04 is a wise choice to 270 BHP, TD05 from 270 to 350 and TD05/06 from 350 up to at least 417 BHP ( ) and probably higher but not yet proven. I reckon that these turbos for these power ranges have amongst the least lag, best torque and best response found on a 2.0 Subaru engine up to now. Of course some will disagree, if so produce your figures Also the longevity of the TD05/06 hybrid has been debated by some and some issues are being worked through.

Where abouts are you John and when do you plan changing the TD05? I wouldn't mind a spin in the TD05'd motor, something to consider for my long term plans (need to think about the ECU side of things as well though with mine being MY98).

Are you planning any events/meets/etc in the near future I could try and pop along, don't want to eat into your busy schedule!

Of course an easy solution to the increased RPM boost threshold is to get hold of a WRX final drive and rear diff! That would probably more than compensate and give amazing acceleration at the expense of M-way cruising economy and refinement. And of course the cost consideration

I am in Fife - will be at the Star rolling road and the airfield day coming up soon - if I have a 3rd gear (which I don't as of last night trying to put 350 lbft through it.

OK cheers mate I'll have a look in the scotland forum and see if im available those days. Hope you get your box sorted without too much hassle... giving me doubts about increasing torque cos I'm **** scared of missing gears when booting it as things are in case teeth fly off the cogs

I didn't even miss a gear with this, and haven't done really at all for several months.
