Default Opinions on fitting a lower ratio box?

Hi

I'm after a quick bit of advice. For my 01 wrx I'm thinking it may be more fun with a shorter ratio gearbox. It's not a daily drive and here on manx roads we hardly exactly need to cruise. They're good twisty roads. There's no dual carriageways never mind motorways. The car is mapped to about 275 Bhp.

Im not really fussed on a high top speed

Im not interested in fitting 6 speed. Out of my price range. Type RA is rare

ive read there's a low ratio forrester box?

What would you recommend and any experiences?

Thanks

You might have been pointed at a forester box as they have a hilo???? Not sure if they're cluster ratios are lower.

The hilo boxes are in pretty much any NA estate, but never appear on a turbo car and as it's a small secondary shaft and synchro in the box input shaft I'd doubt it would like seeing that much torque.

It could be the foresters have lower ratios to take account of the larger wheels.

Can you fit smaller wheels and tyres?

As an idea, and this just from one of the many online calculators, if your currently on a 235 40 18 and you went to 215 40 17, you'd gear it down by 6.3%.... 60mph becomes 56.

Concensus from most in the know is its a better choice for a drivers car anyway. 18s for show and 17s for go.
