DO NOT use engine flush !!!!!! Simply warm engine up, drain oil, change filter, priming the new one (pre-fill 2-3x), fill with 4l of fresh oil, start and warm through again, switch off and stand 5 minutes, check level and top up to required level. Take for a gentle run for 20 mins then re-check level and have a look around for leaks around sump plug and filter.

    hi thanks for your reply,

it had 5w40 synthetic oil in the engine when i bought it, but i put in 5w30 part synthetic as a top up i didnt change the oil fully. after the top up i started hearing a tapping on a cold start after the car warms up the tapping dissapears or is vey faint. im doing a full oil change tomorrow! u say put oil in the filter before it fitted how much? should i also use a engine flush before i drop the oil out or the car or not bother.. thanks for the help

You don't say if you did a full change or just topped up the low oil. Mixing different oils isn't advised, but shouldn't cause a problem. The type of oil shouldn't cause this problem either, but thinner oil might highlight an underlying problem. You don't actually say what grade the new oil is, just that the old was 5w40. If you're worried, get a bottle of decent fully synth and do a full drop.

If you did a full change, did you prime the new filter ? If you don't fill the filter with oil (top off at least 3 times to allow it to soak in) prior to fitting then you can get a brief period of oil starvation when you first restart the car immediately after. There have been many Subaru engines that have been damaged because of this simple oversight.

hi can i ask u a question lol,,hi i put semi synthetic oil in my subaru impreza wrx 2003 after buying it. the oil was quite low but still enuff on the dip stick. i notice on the service sheets the car always had 5w 40 synthetic used always. since putting the oil in i seem to be suffering from a knocking/tapping noise at low revs when cold. i think it must be piston slap as it dies down when the engine is warm. but seems strange how its started since ive put the new oil in. is it the thinner oil or part synth that has caused it? what can or should i do to stop it.
