Default No e-mail application with laptop?

We got a laptop for Chrissie present for our daughter today, windows 7 on it etc. I've just been making sure it is set up and charged up. Doesn't appear to be any e-mail application. I've tried to download outlook express but all sorts of cackola pops up so I'm not sure if you can actually download it for free. Any ideas?

Hotmail uses a web browser, Outlook is hardly used anymore.
Most use web based email management.

you could also use Mozilla Thunderbird if you want a standalone email client, or windows live mail 2011.

Yeah she can just start a hotmail or similar I suppose. I just thought I would set it up with her current pop account so it is all good to go on Christmas day.

there is no email app bundled with win7 - but you can use 'windows live' mail (comes with 'windows live' essentials)

As above pop emails are a waste of time these days, I only have one at work as it is forced on me, my virgin email address provided by the the supplier is not used, they even email my bills to my hotmail account.

A good starting point would be to let us know what "e-mail" account your daughter subscribes to - then we can recommend a programme to connect to it!

I use Windows Live Mail, great little program. Can be used for POP3 and web mail accounts. Get it from here :

Erm, "live mail" should already be supplied on win 7 its just not short-cutted (had this before, its there just not in the start menu).

Just configure POP3/SMTP like you did on win mail or outlook express. No need to use a web browser or third party app.

edit: the only issue with Live mail is importing email from office outlook (not express) - it won't accept .pst files, they need to be converted using a third party program called mailstore ( info here: http://www.sevenforums.com/browsers-...tml#post488302 )

pop3 = easy to use but grief to manage
