Default Will this work?

What I want to do is set up a wireless network in my house. I have a laptop and a note book both running windows XP.

I am on mobile broadband and get w@nk signal in the house except for one upstairs room so -

Can I use the older laptop in that room and connect it to a wirleless router with the ethernet cable, connect the mobile dongle in a usb port and then connect to it all with the notebook downstairs which has wireless built in?

Please help before I go insane

Is that a no? Or a suggestion? I was aware of 3g routers but I am a tight git and it pains me to spend money when I don't have to.

i think you probably could do it, but i think i'd need a higher IQ to make it work lol

you're basically trying to use internet connection sharing over the wireless network.

over to the experts

Yes you can theoretically.

I can't remember if Internet Connection Sharing acts as a DHCP/DNS server? If it does, just disable DNS & DHCP on your router and your old laptop should handle internal IP's etc.

It also depends on your router in how it routes the traffic from the wireless segment onto the lan segment.

yes it does it - uses the 192.168.0.1 ip with a 24 bit subnet mask

and will expect all hosts to be on the same address range

also remember - whether something connects via a cable or a wirelessly is irrelevant to IP routing -- in the same way that the colour of the cable does not matter

Spent ages on this last night and managed to get the wireless laptop connected to the router for about 10 seconds and it just kept disconnecting and saying invalid ip address.

Chefdude and jonny..

I apologise for the hijack but I've just moved into the sticks and have been told that the Broadband connection through the BT phone line might be slow

What sort of speed can I expect from a 3 G wireless router.........and more importantly can it run Runescape !!

Cheers

Shaun

Its great when it works fine for browsing. The question is can you be arsed to hang the dongle out of your window everytime you want to use the internet? I have no idea what runescape is.
