Internet where I live in Wales is not particularly fast broadband, its all of 10mbs wireless solution and Superfast Cymru managed to somehow stick up lots of poles but then never wired them up & closed off the program

So came across a company offering 4G Wifi as a local solution. I looked into it a bit and then purchased a 4G Wifi modem and signed up to Virgin (using EE) 45GB monthly tariff offer. Set it all up and I now get 40mbs with a 38ms ping - happy with that!

What's even better is that I have it load balanced with the wireless solution, so it only really uses it when heavy demand. When I get round to it, I'll be able to assign different IPs/tasks to different solutions, so for instance I might use work laptop via 4G for conferencing and working on large data requests, then set up TV for Netflix to use the wireless. Whichever way, I should be able to manage to keep within the 45Gb.

Sure its old hat to some people but I've only just changed my mobile to EE to get a signal around here. Glad I did now & I can stop worrying about Superfast Cymru 2 to get off the ground...

I'm guessing you are using a Draytek for the load sharing?

I used to use one at work to share two ADSL connections with 3G backup. Pretty good once I fathomed it out. Still mega slow; one ADSL line topped out at 2mbps and the other 4mbps which dropped out frequently (could never get openreach to fix it). But at least we were never without Internet.

On virgin now and we all have 4G smartphones, so those days are long gone. Just as well as its all VOIP now, the only issue is when Virgin somehow mess up the router/firewall settings during router updates and kill the VOIP in the process. Which reminds me, we still don't have any proper failover strategy if/when it does die (bar phoning up the provider and re-routing to a mobile) it should be automated but it's always had to be done via phoning the provider Apathy on my part...I enjoy the silence of the phone not ringing.

I've just bought a new 4g router and ditched BT. We got 6mb on BT, now we get 60mbs on EE. we have 200gb per month for the same costs of ****ty 6mb BT

Wait until 5g gets going next year, then you'll see some speed.

I've always said BT had better sort themselves out, otherwise mobile will take over.

I'm happy with 70mb, when 5G become the norm I'll be able to get unlimited 4G connection.
