Default Office Excel 2016

Hey guys, hoping someone smarter than me can help out here.

Here is an issue i'm having:

Open a .xls extension file in and getting this message: "Excel unable to read file".

So how to open or repair .xls file? Why does this error appear? I could open this file before.

Any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure its an excel file? Have you tried opening it in libreoffice for example?

Go to XLSTART folder and delete the temp file. Than restart Excel.
Also you can try to upload your Excel spreadsheet to this service https://onlinefile.repair/en/excel.html an re-open the file.

Ok, some things to check:

1) Do you happen to have the preview option turned on in Windows Explorer? - this would show you a preview of the file on the right hand side? -if so turn this off as this can cause excel files not to open

2) Has anything happened since the last time you were able to open the files (change of date on the PC? PC crashed etc?)

3) Try opening excel on its own (not double clicking on the file) and then going to file and open - select your file and see if that opens it?

If none of that works ideally you need to send the file to someone to take a look, if it doesnt contain anything sensitive then im happy to have a go

will leave it with you mate

Make a copy of it and rename the copy to .csv and/or .txt and see if it opens those, if so then resave it in the correct .xlsx format. If it works you may lose some formatting.
