Default Crawford Performance S1 2.5 STI Bottom End

This is a Crawford Performance S1 2.5 litre STI bottom end, spec as follows:

EJ257 Semi Closed Deck Block
STI Crankshaft
STI Rods
STI Main and Big End Bearings
Crawford Performance Forged Pistons with STI rings
STI Modified Oil Pump
ARP Head Stud Kit
Block / Pistons assembled by Crawford Performance in USA, the rest of the work done at Subaru4You.

It also comes with the modine oil cooler, sump, oil pickup, dipstick and tube, exactly as pictured.

The engine has covered approximately 20,000 miles from new and has been running 350bhp with a td05 turbo and 440cc injectors so has not been particularly stressed. It has come out of a straight forward road car and not used on track or the like. Would be ideal for a 400bhp+ build. Pistons are forged and are not as quiet as standard pistons.

Price is now reduced to £1250 collected. Can be delivered on a pallet for £60.

Please PM or phone 07541 016047 if interested.

Cheers

Ken

Need to shift this so will accept £1500 cash on collection, bank transfer or debit card payment. Still happy to post at extra cost, pallets start at £60 depending on insurance level to UK addresses.

Isn't that an Open deck block and not a semi closed?

It has the cylinder supports at the sides as well as the ends of the block so I think semi-closed ?

Customs invoice shows it arrived in the UK in March 2006. I would expect the mileage is more important or indicative of usage than the age though.

I will get in touch with Crawford to find out the power limits and post when I get an answer.

Response from Team Crawford to my query about safe power levels:

Hello Ken,

Your S1 is good for 500bhp and around 425tq. Just make sure it is not
detting and you will be fine.

Torque figure is usually higher than hp on the 2.5 though?
So if it will only do that torque ,hp will be less if ya get me,correct me if I'm wrong

Cool, cheers for getting figures.

I am interested in this but just want assuring that the bottom end is sound and has no worn bearings or abnormalities, as I have been burnt in the past lol!

Why has the engine been taken out?

Cheers

This bottom end is sound, I drained the oil and it was completely clear, no sparkly bits, the car ran really well, it is definitely not knocking, you are quite welcome to come and take a look at it with no obligation to buy.

The engine was taken out because the car was broken for spares, it was bought to break although it still had tax and mot when bought. The wheel arches were extensively corroded but otherwise the car was fine. Here is the thread where I advertised the car for breaking:

https://www.scoobynet.com/full-cars-...06-silver.html

I removed the cylinder heads and have used them on a 2.0 block which is now fitted in my 94 wrx wagon. If I had a newage car then I would most likely have fitted the 2.5 in and sold the 2.0, but my wagon has a td04 top entry turbo, 380cc injectors and a standard ecu so it would require a lot of mods to make it worthwhile and to run safely.

I can understand you may be wary if you have had a bad experience before but I can assure you this is absolutely fine. My aim is to build my business on honest dealings with people so they recommend it to others and come back in the future when they need something else, hence I have a lot of good feedback on here which I want to maintain. If I had any reservations or doubts about this engine I would strip it down, have the components checked at the machine shop and verified as good or bad, then sell the good ones separately and chuck away the bad. I have done that before on an EJ20 engine that just had piston slap from cold. I have sold other engines to people on here, including the original engine out of my wagon, and they have been very happy with them.

Hope this helps reassure you, let me know if you need any more info etc.

Regards

Ken

Hey chap,

Thanks for the response, you have definitely set my mind at ease.

I'll have a look and see if I can get the cash together.

What is the best price you'll take both collected and delivered (pm if need be) Bristol.

Many thanks ;-)

I queried this with Crawford and checked the units they were using, they said this:

The units we use here are lb/ft as well, not Newton meters. That said, if your BHP figures are lower than your torque then something is wrong with the tuning. BHP is always higher than TQ but WHP and TQ can be very close.

Team Crawford

Engine is still available, open to near offers, or doing a deal with something as a part ex or WHY. Can build with your heads, provide fitting service etc. if needed.

Look at any 2.5 dyno printouts both flywheel figures (Its what most quote anyway down the pub), torque in lb/ft is always higher, on 2.0 the hp would be higher than the torque figure

Sure even a well known mapper estimated figures of 350hp and 380torque with my forged 2.5 with a VF35 .A friends car made 454hp and 511 torque with a MD321T and 2.5 forged engine aswell

I can only relay the information I have been given in emails from Crawford. The figures they provided are in response to the question 'what are the safe limits'. They are the manufacturer / supplier / product developer so I can't think of any other way of getting more info other than building it up and testing it to destruction.

They are saying 'don't make it produce more than 425 torque or more than 500bhp because that is the limit', not that 'if you map it then you will get 425 torque and 500 bhp on your dyno plot'.

If the engine was set up and mapped to produce 425 torque and maintain this then at approx 6200rpm it would be producing 500bhp. After 6200rpm the BHP would exceed 500 unless the torque decreased. How achievable maintaining this torque level is, I don't know, but it works like that mathematically.

The figures you are seeing on the dyno sheet are peaks reached during the dyno run, which isn't the same as 'what are the the safe limits', so trying to compare them is not a like for like comparison.

Please let me know if you are interested in buying the engine, quite happy to arrange shipping to Ireland

Cheers Cal

My car is almost back on the road after you taking the engine all that time back. I am just waiting on a mate welding in a lambda bung to the downpipe for the oxygen sensor (to be done tomorrow) then I can go for an mot, and hopefully tax from 1st September. That's what I get for changing the headers for 97 ones with no sensor bung !

The engine I built up for it is running fine, looking forward to getting back out in it.

Cheers

Ken
