We've got a volvo v5 d5 180bhp 270 torques and does 45mpg. Once moving it's pretty quick, 5 cylinder engine so it has a little character about it. Looks quite smart too.

If you need a good 2nd car, I cant think of anything better then a diesel BMW!!

BMW every time. Very tuneable also. The 123D will put out 260bhp and 340 lbs ft with a remap. Sporty enough for you?

MK 5 Golf GT Tdi 140?

As it happens I have one for sale (company car arrived this week), and its right in the middle of your budget at £7.5k.

Pulls like a train, easily does over 50mpg.

10k will get you a very nice low mileage 320d m sport. 177-184 bhp and mappable upto 220bhp for less than £500.

I HAD a Volvo S40 R-design 2.0 ltr... Pokey little number, and in white everyone thinks you're a police car, and you get let out more at junctions,

If you want sporty I wouldn't bother with the Volvo, I had the first V50 sport in the Uk with almost every option, while it was a nice place to be and a lovely car, it was very easy to find it's limits, quite sloppy on the edge and bit vague too, it's basically a Ford focus in a fancy dress.

But don't let me put you off because they are very nice mine was gun metal grey with fancy wheels, leather, winter pack, sport pack and other stuff I can't remember, it was 2005 only thing I didn't have was sat nav as our cars all ran smart nav, definitely have the look back factor and used to p!ss off a lot of managers too, engineer with a better car, very classy but really not what I would call sporty.
