When looking at mpg of vehicles I look at the city mpg and that is what you will get as an average for the car you buy.
The way vehicle manufacturer produce the mpg figures is to put a tiny amount of fuel in a test tank , run the engine on a rig for a few minutes and calculate that usage from a small, short test. Complete fantasy.

I have an MY13 220 cdi blue efficiency saloon with 7 speed auto similar to yours.
I've done 5k miles since new in march and around town it's averaging 38mpg.
Once on a steady motorway run it jumps to around 55mpg.
I don't think it's too bad although as you say not what MB suggest it should be doing.

That can't be right. I have a 350CDI S Class which has 2 extra cylinders, 1 litre more engine, and probably a good half-ton more weight, and I average around 39mpg. Driving is 80% on A-class roads and motorways. Extremely careful driving will easily return over 47mpg on a trip.

mpg is far more a driver issue than the vehicle , it's ok saying urban or cruising down the motorway
It's how you reach the cruising speed or how quick you go lights to lights on the urban run
My 320cdi is fantastic on fuel and can return well into the 40,s with great ease , yet I was speaking to someone with a similar car and he said he struggled to get more than low 30,s and was convinced there was a problem with it so took it to a couple of garages , but no problems were found
Driving style is the key
