Default Ooooops, need engine bay cleaned...help

Yes, I am a total ********.

I topped up the engine oil in my M5 and then proceeded to drive off without putting the cap back on.
Had a moment of clarity and decided to double check, so pulled over, and true enough engine oil every where, whipped out the weeks used boxer shorts and gave it a good wipe down

Anyway, all is fine, no damage just a dirty engine bay.

So whats the best way to go about cleaning it, can I just get in there with a pressure washer, or should I be taking a bit more care. There is not much room in there.
Can I user a cleaninig agent?

I am ashamed

Get a good engine degreaser from the likes of meguires or autoglym or a strong all purpose cleaner and some brushes, cover up all electrics first, liberally spray the cleaner on a cold engine bay leave for about a minute or so and then use the brush to agitate the dirt away when finished use a steady flow of clean water to flush the dirt away and redo if not as clean as you wanted then use a engine sealant to protect your hard work and bring a overall good Finnish to your engine bay, this is just a quick guide for you but you should get my drift.SJ.

I'd be more worried about oil starvation.

Get some gunk for clearing up the bulk of the mess, then standard engine dressing products.

Thanks for all the advice, however I have decided to get it done professionally. Its a scary looking engine bay so I am going to steer well clear.

Got it booked in here

As everyone else has said, use a degreaser. It's the degreaser that does the work not the pressure of the water. Spray it liberally, cover any obviously electrical parts, and just use the jet wash to wet it down. You wont need to get in close with it

agree with above -- it would be madness to subject an engine that complex to a pressure hose

years and years ago a mate got a brand new Mk3 Golf GTI 16v - after about 2 months of ownership he pressure washed the engine - and had a very slight misfire for the next 3 years, untill he sold it

I have always found gunk really good - simple and effective
