VW Golf Bluemotion
Looking at a VW Golf Bluemotion for decent mpg, cheap tax and vw reliability, but my price range is only going to accommodate a high mileage one, so 80k plus. Does anybody have any ideas on how these diesels handle the high miles? Anything to look out for other than general servicing items?
VW reliability, urban myth. The high mileage modern diesel out of warranty could easily negate the fuel savings from what would be minor repairs on some petrol engines. May still be the right car, but do a lot of research.
I'm quite open to other suggestions as well, the bluemotion just looks a good buy on paper. I've never owned anything other than French or Japanese, so don't really know much first hand info on the 'VW reliability myth', ideally just looking for a reliable diesel with £30 or less tax - purely as my partners annual car park charge is based on tax/emissions.
I'm not saying that Blue Motion Golf won't be a good package for you, just that in terms of economy most cars can be mapped to get great results. The VW reliability myth is a bit hit & miss, some cars are faultless, others money pits, if you don't want to get stung then go for V low miles.

i dissagree ive had more problems with low mileage cars in the past now buy 100k plus examples and dont get issues touch wood my current one is on 150k
Your luck must be working against logic then. Statistically the lower the miles the less ware & the more reliable. However if the high milers you are buying are older models which have more basic technology then this may explain things. Every year cars become more complex & more expensive to fix.

LOL, like I said your luck defies logic. I see 15 to 20 different cars through my garage every day & the older high milers are the money pits, fact. We work on all sorts from one year old cars in for a first service through to 50 year old classics. Some people are lucky though & seem to get away with more than others. Totally agree with you on French cars though, we see so many with serious problems that end up being money pits.
