Default 99 diff/gearbox issue

So the other day I was reversing up a slight hill when I heard what can only be described as a loud snap from the rear end. I pulled off slowly in 1st to hear a loud grinding noise and the car felt like it was struggling to move the rear wheels almost felt like the brakes on the rear were seized.

I also noticed that the gearbox felt strange very hard to engage gears.

Would damage to the rear diff have damaged the gearbox?

I have been offered a gearbox and diff from a earlier sti I believe it's a L reg car but don't quote me on that yet. would this be suitable to fit to a 99 uk turbo?

Also I have seen there are 6 speed conversions available dose anyone have and info on these cost, parts lists, Ect

Thanks in advance

A very sad scooby owner

Thanks for the info. It's going to be a long weekend. Never removed a diff or gearbox only one way to learn tho.

I have not dropped it out yet. Doing gearbox out and diff at same time just waiting for a transmission jack to arrive before I start. Will let you know as soon as it's out.
