Default Winter Tyres.....

So who is fitting them?

I am putting mine on at the weekend, when I say I am fitting them I mean £15 for the local tyre fitter to swap over the 19" summer to 18" winters.

On another note, does this mean my speedo will be over or under reading?

I got some today and will probably get around to fitting them next week.

I contacted my insurance company out of interest and was told that "I must" tell them when I fit them!!

Not costing anymore but they must be told when they're fitted.

Just a heads up.

Yeah, spoke to my insurer yesterday (Tesco) they are happy for me to fit them whenever I like at no charge as long as the wheel size is no bigger.

I wouldn't bother myself. If the weather is really bad then either don't drive or go slow. I think sometimes winter tyres (like AWD) just make people over confident.

I've just bought a set of four wheels and winter tyres for our Fiesta. All I need now is for it to get cold.

Mazing the difference winter tyres make. Ran mine over the last 2 winters but the car is off the road this winter and I'll be using my A4 quattro which won't have winter tyres this winter.

If going from 19's to 18's just make sure the overall diameter stays the same so use a larger profile tyre.

Gonna have some M3 CSL copies on my 330 with some Khumo winter tyres. After my last experience of this car in the snow there is no way i'm sticking with the all weathers which was a cross between downright dangerous and doesn't actually move.

Intersting theory, but not one that sits with me, do you apply the same "over confidence" priniciple to say ABS, Traction Control, Electronic Stability Control and all the other driver aids that appear on most modern cars?

Surely additional grip and shorter braking can only be a good thing, bad (over confident) drivers are bad drivers, nothings going to change that.

Trouble with that is that I live out in the sticks so if I don't drive I don't eat/work/check on my parents who are in there eighties.

Last year the local council were great and gritted and ploughed virtually every road. The year before they only occasionally gritted the main road which I rarely have to use. Getting anywhere was a nightmare.

Seriously? Your taking the **** there right?

How can you make performance and ability proportional to overconfidence?

And im guessing you live on the flat somewhere?

None of the people who come out against winter tyres have ever used them. Strange that...

To the OP, your speedo will probably be relatively unaffected as winter tyres usually have a higher profile than ordinary tyres and so the rolling diameter will be relatively unaffected. You'll also notice a quieter smoother ride due to the softer rubber.

Had mine fitted today on the Octy VRS - £40 for all four summer tyres off, all four winter tyres on, four new valves and four balances.. which I thought was pretty good value...

Used them for the first time last winter, 200BHP through just the front wheels does tend to make it "interesting" in the snow/ice.... so fitted winter's on and whilst it wasn't the grip I had in the Scoob, it was such a better grip...

One set of Winter tyres should last me at least 4 years, maybe 5... so worth the expense IMHO...

Khumo KW27 review quite well. I was going to have some but I went in a different direction for convenience.
Are you on 225/40's all round or are the rears 255/35?

Devils advocate here, but when skimping on price with tyres, you usually end up with a Korean/Indionesian/Chinese made tyre, and they suffer mainly with two problems : grip and premature ageing.

So why fit a tyre with inferior grip to a branded counterpart during a time you need grip the most? Same with ageing ...if the rubber starts to harden and perish after a few years, wet/cold grip level will worsen.

Just a school of thought.

Rears are still 255 but looking to bring them down with the winter set.

I know what your saying Ali and I wouldn't disagree, but people have different views on different tyres and have often heard people say even the budget winter range work better than summer tyres which is why I ask tbh.

I appreciate general consensus and my own thoughts should be don't skimp on rubber as it's the only contact between your *** and the Tarmac, but it's my mrs daily driver more than myself at the moment and she's pretty switched on and is not a "fast driver" so just wanting to add a bit of beef for the winter months.
