Default car for commuting

Hi all, looking for some advice. Been offered a job in kent . . literally opposite side of the country to me but brilliant money so am looking at commuting monday-friday. Question is what to use. I dont want to blow too much as it will only be a workhorse . . at the same time I dont want a new age aygo or something similar.

Its got to be well put together and economical, any suggestions? I wamt to spend circa 5k to avoid getting a loan or finance.

selling the impreza isnt an option either

A bit like Banny I bought a golf GT tdi 130pd meant to be more reliable than the mk5 tdi's done 40k (80-120k) in it past 2 years, service it myself every 10k take s a few hours and £80 in parts from Opie, never put a foot wrong, drive it like i've nicked it and it does 45mpg or 50 when driving Miss Daisy.

I have a set of Dunlop winters for the cold months and in 15" they are cheap and better in the snow than my STI is albeit with summers on

paid 3k a few years ago will keep it until it dies
