3 words:
warranty warranty warranty.

By that I mean seek one of the few remaining with extendable BMW warranty and keep it going. It will pay for itself and will make the car worth more at resale. Then there's the tank size and fuel consumption. Apart from that I would seriously consider it. Unlikely to see a V10 in a saloon car again.

i researched these a lot a while back, the stories of gearbox failure will terrify you, awesome awesome cars but if the box fails then the new one costs a serious amount of cash and i mean SERIOUS. 0-172 in around 32 seconds if i remember rightly on one video on youtube.

AMG mercs seemed more reliable and cheaper to repair if it goes wrong

The car I wish I never sold. Do a search and you should find my ramblings about the car.

Buy a Audi B7 RS4. I looked at both options and the audi is a far better option. I went for the audi as it is more reliable, better to drive and less expensive to repair. Although every time I choose my subaru to drive as the grin factor is more.

Good to see what is said regarding this car as its what I'm getting.. I know it's prob wrong but I got out of my impreza and skyline feeling like an old man in a kids car... Just don't feel right.... Sad time as I've had a GTR since 2000, but we all get to 40 sometime.. At least I can still be an hooligan in a grown up car ..lol

Cheers for the replies guys

The RS6 is shocking to run the M5 isn't too bad considering the type of car it is ! I'd love an RS4 B7 but its trying to find a good one thats not been crashed !

I know what you mean about growing up, however it is difficult, At least sideways in an impreza is less expensive than in a M5 or RS4 when it goes wrong..

I you find a B7 RS4 make sure it has been overhauled, otherwise you are looking at big bills. I bought an 06 which had the brakes ( inc callipers), suspension and other running gear renewed. Should hopefully be smooth running however it did just cost me £840 for new oil pipes and a new oil cooler. Audi use steel pipes on an alloy cooler which is not a good mix 7 years on.

When I get bored with the 420bhp, £12 K will give me reliable 600 bhp to play with. However it is not a much fun as my scoob....

That's your opinion, not fact.

I was one of the first to have a B7 rs4 in the UK. I kept it four days and then sold it.

It is a quick car but the M5 is a proper fast car, you can't compare the two. Most M5s make more than the stated 507bhp and most rs4s have been shown to make significantly less than the stated 420 bhp.

The v8 of the rs4 is an ok engine, the 5 litre v10 in the M5 is something very special. Almost racecar like when it's still pulling like a train at 8000rpm.

The m5 also has better toys ie heads up display, actively inflating seats etc.

As for reliability, I don't know the answer but I suspect you don't really either.

The M5 is not without its flaws and issues, as I've pointed out many times before. However it is special in a way the rs4 isn't imho. The engine in particular is something that is very special and not something that most of us will have the pleasure of experiencing in the future ie large displacement NA that revs to over 8000rpm.
Only very exotic cars will continue to have engines like this ie Ferraris etc.

All imho of course

Love that colour. Moonstone isn't it? Probably the best colour for a M5.

It wont get used too often as I have a 205 GTi for running around in I'll get a warranty on it just in case anything big does break !

Failing the BMW extended warranty being available... anyone used Warranty Direct?

If I didn't already have a car I am keeping, a lease on an M5 would be very tempting. On a 6+23 they are £500+VAT a month. Warranted, taxed, not keeping long enough to get expensive to run, probably a better proposition than a used M5. The E60 M5 is awesome though. If I knew then how good winter tyres are or that I would get a Subaru for winter anyway, I would probably have one.

RS4 at 8000 RPM just didn't compare to the epic V10.

Nigh on £700 pm on a personal lease, before you add any options.
You could easily be paying £800+ pm..... With just a few niceties....

That said, you'd probably still pay less over two years than you'd lose in depreciation if an outright purchase.
