What a total waste of money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is all this about then???
When a petrol station closes down, they totally demolish it (and invariably dig out the tanks as well) only to replace it with another, to all intents and purposes, that is the same.
If it is of a different company then it is understandable (not economical, but understandable) to do this due to brand identity. If the same company do it then..... WHY??
Case in point: A40 westbound at the perivale turnoff, BP station, just closed, totally cleared the site, now being rebuilt as.... BP station again. Have they go too much money? Could they not have kept the old one and kept the fuel price down? Are they just crazy?

As far as I know/think, it is the law that at least older stations have to be dug out and replaced every 7 years or so to replace the tanks. Legislation due to prolonged containment of flammable/hazardous chemicals and seeping into the ground from cracked tanks etc etc. Newer stations may be build to higher standards.
I may no squat, but I think this the reason, roundabouts....

I made a similar comment about the Esso station near Gatwick, but was told by the taxi driver (no comment) that they were probably fitting BIGGER tanks. As tankers have to deliver maybe four different types of fuel, reducing frequency tanker deliveries could substantially save money.

'psssy mate, wanna see some 98RON!!!'
Personally I think that it's probably some way to spend more money so thay they don't have to give it back to us by lowering fuel prices

I also heard that they tanks have to be dug up and repleaced every 7 years. Thats why one of the large petrol companies (cant think of its name at the moment) has just dissapeared from the UK, they say its too exspensive here with the legislation so have sold up and are concentrating on the less eco friendly, and so cheaper, nations.

Serious reply now
Tanks have a working life of x years depending on the type of tank. We are redoing our garage soon and will be fitting two new tanks to replace old ones with larger ones.
I don't think there is a 7 year rule, but we check through put daily to test for leaks.
There are some serious penalties if tanks leak, so during a redevelopment new tanks are a good option, along with new pipeing etc.
