a bit info on how you fitted it may help, i.e sandwich plate or under alternator, but I would suggest the connector at the back of the gauge first port of call
Is it a stepper gauge.
The non steppers use a cheapy sender (large round silver thing with two thumb screws on it ).
If its this sender then make sure the wires are on the correct terminals and the negative goes to a good earth in the engine bay.
