Default Lifting the stairs carpet for painting?

Looking to gloss the stairway. It would be so much easier to remove the stairs carpet. Been down 5 years, will it just "lay" down again, or will it need fitting. I think there's tacks either end, and those gripper bars on each footing.

Its hessian backed.

Av just lifted my living room carpet to run the sky cables under it. IMO it need done properly. Is wont grip the tacks now. It needs stretched onto them with one of them things they knee a think. Am sure a carpet fitter would only charge ya 30-40 quid to put it backdown. Would only take 30mims

You can buy the carpet knee banging things from b&q!! Put it towards edge of carpet n knee it!!! With stair carpet get glue in a can (spray can) and glue it back down if the rails won't grip it again!! That's what I did on stairs

Why don't you just put some masking tape down instead of the hassle of lifting the carpet?

Its the rubbing down bit that is easier without a carpet.
