Default Front brakes clicking

2002 impreza wagon wrx
Done pads disks shoes all round had to take front caliper a off to move pistons.
Put them back together ever since I have done this I get on pulling up to a junction if I press brake pedal lightly a clicking sound when I press it harder the sound stops.
Could it be the pistons are rattling in caliper since having to loosen them.it wasn't doing it before I done the pad, disk change.i have bled all 4 corners in order of service manual.cheers for reading this any advice welcome.

Its the pads moving in the caliper myne do it too :/

doesnt effect my braking eficiency but it does **** me off as it never used to do it, i put it down to the cheap and nasty kevlar pads i bought off here :/ changing them with some standard mintex road pads soon/ when its warm enough..... What pads are you running?

Mine's doing it too, also on kevlar pads.

I only get it when changing direction, i.e. when reversing to going forward or the other way around.

It's a bit annoying, as it sounds like something is broken, but it hasn't affected performance at all.

Mine too also on Kevlar pads, and my last blob also done it and that also had kevlar pads, sound like the caliper bolts a bit loose IMO, as said only does it under change of direction, when I first heard it I pulled it all back apart to double check everything and all was good, everything was tight and as it should be so I just put I down to the pads moving slightly against the pins.

My brakes clicked after changing pads, BECAUSE the retaining clips had been inserted upside down, apparently easy done, so check in to this.

Correctly installed example:


The curved part keeps the pads "flicked up" so when you touch the brakes the pads are at the top of the caliper, if the clip is fitted upside down they keep the pads "flicked down" so every time you touch the brakes the pads MOVE up to the top of the caliper making a banging noise then immediately flick down for the next braking session..

Go check please.

Hi. I've had exactly same problem after changing brakes (discs and pads all round).
At the end I found that that metal pin was causing the problem. It had a little groove which was stopping the pads move/slide freely.

I would say YES. Calipers are built and work same so...
If you have same problem, just change them round (pins) and listen from which side the noise is coming.
Mine was making that single clicking/knocking noise in driver side wheel. Changed those pins round and noise appears on passenger side so was 100% sure that the pin is causing the problem.
10 minutes job. Make sure you clean those pins (I've used some sand paper) and put some copper grease when putting back on.

The retaining clips look different to mine on the Brembo's I've just been out for a quick squint ( through the wheels ) unless mine are *** backwards and that is the case

Mine look like they are correct and are the same as the image ( taken from google )



I'm going to try some new pins tho, for what they cost it is worth a try

Obviously new pads have less movement in the calipers and sliding less on the pins compared to worn pads.
As I said, to change those pins from left to right wheel only take few minutes so...

When they knock, they cause the damage to those pins as you can see on my picture. The holes in pads where the pins going through are not rounded, they're sharp so every time you press the brake pedal they are hitting the pins causing little groove.
Not saying for 100% that you have the same problem but that is how it looks to me.

99% of the time this is the fitting kits been installed upside down

Also if you have worn pins we offer fitting kits for £13.99

We sell hundreds of these kits as most people change them when changing their pads as the cost isnt much when considering the price of decent pads.

One thing for the OP...... If you had to free off the pistons when fitting your brake pads its very likely they will seize up within a couple of months again and then they will overheat your discs and pads and possibly warp the discs and cook the pads.

I advise getting your calipers reconditioned which we can do for you at a excellent price £214.99 minus the forum discount of £15 per set including powder coating a colour you choose and stainless steel pistons. We can do your or offer you an exchange set. Or you can buy repair kits from our website also if you do things yourself.

When you have managed to get them free the corrosion is still in the caliper housing you just moved it so doesn't take long to seize again, we shot blast the housings and give a 2 year warranty.

Just wanted to add my thanks to riiidaa.
Bought my scooby 4 months ago and always had the clunk when first touched brakes, did a search saw this post and guess what....my clips were upside down!
Nice quick and free fix.

It's my abs causing clicking when braking took abs relay out me brakes work fine either need to take abs bulb out or get abs fault diagnosed.

Interesting reading all this, my brakes have been sh*te for a while after some spirited driving, I'm looking to replace front disks and pads (brembos) but I'm now wondering if it could be something else, when I'm slowing down usually at pretty slow speeds my brakes make a clicking and sort of springy type noise (I know that sounds daft lol) but it does it until I stop and its really irritating sounds like the callipers going to fall off.

Mine was just a clunk when first hit brakes. No other noises and felt fine.
But worth striping them down and make sure everything is in right place.

Try disconnecting your abs it may be something to do with that
