Coilovers or springs??
I know this might have been covered before but i cant find much on it.
I have a '03 blob sti which is knocking from the back (been told its the top mounts) i wanted to lower it on springs for the cost but would i be better off buying coilovers now and if so which ones?

I've recently gone the springs route, managed to source some Prodrive springs for my widetrack Blob and they'll be going on refurbed OEM shocks (grease nipple etc).
There's a fair chance your knocking is caused by the common grease issue rather than the top mounts, but changing to KYB shocks should rectify it either way.

cheers bud but wouldnt it be cheaper to buy coilovers rather then shocks and springs seperate?

You're talking 6-700quid for the BC Racing Coilovers, quite a popular entry-level choice.

The point I think Tidgy made is that coilovers don't automatically become the best choice just because they're coilovers. For fast road use, OEM shocks and springs are far more suited than coilovers even when adjusted to their softest setting... our roads are just too bumpy and you'll lose more time backing off because your car is clanging and banging all over the road.

Whole point of coilovers is to allow changes in setup for different tracks and conditions. When they are changed they need to be checked that the geom is right and balanced, not just changed at random. at £50-£75 for a geom setup it becomes an expensive proposition so most people leave as is. So you have all that adjustability, hard ride and they become pointless as fonzey says.
A decent set of shocks give a nice balanced ride and lowering springs drop the car without going to the point of so low they have little give.

Fair points. this is my first scooby so still learning what works well and where to get it from etc just a little concerned that with springs it might not go as low as i want it, i dont really drive it hard enough to warrent spending loads of money and wallet still feels a bit light after buying the car haha

Although I haven't experienced it myself, I've read that Impreza's really don't like going particularly low. If you've got 17's on, maybe getting some bigger wheels will fill the arches a bit better.
Thinking about the same thing with my own MY03 blob at the moment.
Probably going to go the spring route rather than coil overs.
Been looking at Tein and Prodrive springs. Also been told about Whiteline springs too that are supposed to be pretty good.

Forget the coil overs, the sti suspension is the best you'll get. if you go the coil-over route you'll pay to have them fitted and then set up and then you'll need to change or buy other parts so the suspension does what it is supposed to do, keep the tyres in contact with the road. For everything their is a compromise, just lowering the car on coil overs won't give a better handling car.
