Default 05 sti to a hatch sti.. good move????

Hi all
Been thinking lately of selling my widetrack sti for a hatch sti.. but I don't want all the trouble with the pistols etc I hear so much about.. is it just a case of getting the hatch 're mapped or do u have to go forged?? I'm really clueless on the 2, 5 engines. I just want a litte more refinement in day to day driving..
How would the car differ to mine at the moment?? Mine's currently running 410 bhp. I'm not after that kind of power 350 will do with good torque.
Please any info would help greatly appreciated before or if I do the move

Craig

I went from an 05STI to a 330S

IMO the 330S is the better car, drives better, handles a lot better.
The 05STI was remapped to approx 340, but the 330S feels quicker.
Power delivery is a lot different - 05STI achieved about 350nm around 6K, the 330S has 470nm from just over 3K
The interior of mine is much nicer than the 05STI.

Regarding pistons/remaps etc - sorry, can't comment, but there are issues without doubt.

Oh, and be prepared for the attack of the hatch haters on this forum, no doubt they'll be along soon
Especially one particular pleb who is obsessed with commenting about the hatch

I went from a 53 reg STi to a hatch STi & never regretted it to be fair. I did curse a touch when the engine gave way but luckily I had a forged short motor built ready to go in.

Bought my MY08 STI at a year old and had it mapped pretty much as soon as I got it to 345 of there abouts as was not confident with the oe map, run like clockwork to date, only warranty was on a new battery and corroded 330s wheels.

Pleasure to drive, very civilised around town and pretty rapid when you want it to be, IMO a few sublte mods needed on the outside to get it looking right!

Currently thinking of selling but for the money there is not much on the market when comparing age/performance/spec that beats it so I'm struggling to find a replacement, only thing on my list is an E90 M3 but RWD and V8 mpg is putting me off!

Go for a test drive and see what you think, the haters are out there but in the real world I've only receive positive comments from fellow scooby owners.

330S is nice inside, the OEM sat nav head unit is good plus its got blue tooth built in, you just need to get a mic.

I always toyed with the idea of a reverse camera, but the price put me off (hundreds of pounds).
Its very difficult to see out the back of the 330S at night, and its only has one reverse light, plus the OEM reverse bulb output is shyte.

Seats are great too

I've seen that hatch on PH, looks great, if I had the money I'd also be very tempted. Looking to move to a hatch in the future but probably a JDM, R205 ideally.

In a ideal world I'd want a jdm hatch but 15k would be my absolute maximum

I've had a bug a blob and currently have a version 3 type r and an 08 Sti hatch. The hatch is the nicest comfortable subaru I've had and it was until recently running around 470 bhp which was very quick on the road! The type r is by far the most fun to drive but defo not a daily lol. Get one you won't be disappointed!

go for the JDM if you can find one. Half the road tax (£465 UK version) and doesnt seem to have the reliability issues. They are all going to be rare beasts as not many were sold and they have stopped selling new hatches in the uk now.

Reliability? Done 35K in mine and not missed a beat. (Bob Rawle remapand always fill it with supermarket petrol)

Sorry mate but I totally disagree with you on this. I have driven a WRXs and I own a 2005 STI and my car is notably quicker than the hatch. Don't get me wrong I do like the hatch, but its not a quick car in wrx form. I would only consider the STI if I were to change mine.

That's interesting, we havnt had a chance to put them head to head on a strip yet, but I know the way it pulls is diferent, the hatch has much lower down pull, whereas I have 2k more revs to go before i start to pull and i would imagine the hatch would be gone

wrx-s couldn't be quicker than the PPP'd STI

The hatch will always feel quicker from low down than a blob due to the extra 0.5 capacity it has.
A hawk will be in the same boat; the 2.5's will usually easily make 400 ft/lbs no problem.
However, the 2.5 engines are often lamented for having weaker and cheaper internals than the earlier 2.0 equivalents.
In particular, it seems to be the pistons that can't cope with higher stress and tend to melt. I've seen a few at my local specialist, one from an STI hatch, and it was very messy and had to be rebored with new pistons, etc.
Turning up the boost and tuning them in standard form much past 360bhp seems to be a bit of a recipe for killing the engine.

Not pretty. I also have to disagree with the comments about the hatch having a nicer interior than a blob.
Personally, I think the first newage bug STI's had the best quality seats in terms of fabric; it looked and was far harder wearing than the ones in my blob STI, BUT the later blob models had a far nicer centre console, steering wheel and trim.

In contrast, having driven a hatch WRX, I have to say I found the interior far cheaper looking; the plastics used and the styling in general seems to be a little hit and miss.
Seats...well...they're ok, but no real improvement over any model.
To summarise, I'd stick with the 05 STI, better looking car (in my opinion), lighter, and if you're concerned about the extra capacity and torque, why not just build a stroker out of yours or buy a 2.5 unit and get it forged?

Best of both worlds . Just some ideas.
