Default Thinking of buying a WR1, your thoughts please.

As the title really. Are they worth the extra money that they seem to go for? Are they any better to drive than a normal STI ? I have watched the videos on YouTube, and the car appears to under steer quite badly. Are they a Marmite car? Any advice from WR1 owners would be appreciated. Any particular things to watch out for when buying?

Thanks in advance.

Just a fancy colour and fog lights really. All Sti's will understeer like pigs if the geometry is off or they are on cheapo tyres. Subaru's hate cheap tyres....

Never liked the colour myself but they are certainly rare. Cant remember the last time I saw one on the road.

that's probably because the normal sti of a similar year is just as good, so most unless wanting a limited badge number wont buy one

to the OP if you are willing to spend that sort of money over a 03/04 plate sti i would suggest buying the later 05/06 sti. they came with a wider rear track to help the under steer plus a revised and in my opinion much better interior

You might like to have a look on the WR1 OC forum which is here:

http://www.wr1oc.co.uk/forum/index.p...07c55059c17248

I was contemplating one last year and found the people on there very friendly and helpful.

I like the colour and the black interior is so much nicer than the chavy blue in standard STI's . I really , really regret selling my WR1 and I replaced it with a Hawkeye STI running pretty big bhp . Most of the people slating them on here have probably never owned one or just don't like the colour .
It's difficult to explain but if you want something a little different that just feels a little bit special I would say give one a try .

Love the interior, hate the exterior.
Top Gear said at the time it was the 'ultimate getaway car' if I remember correctly

My main concern was with the handling, as on the Top Gear test against the Evo, the WR1 was absolutely screeching round the corners and under steering like a pig. I'm not enamoured with the colour, but I do like the wheels and agree the interior looks better than the blue in the sti. I thought that this model was supposed to have uprated suspension? Thanks for your advice so far everyone, any more comments/help appreciated.

Well i will swim against the tide also and chuck my yorkshire ten penneth in. I LOVE the colour of the WR1. Really rare too. My pre-Christmas Subaru budget would not stretch the extra few grand so i picked up late model widetrack blobeye STI. Absolutely love it (even though it is in silver!) I was always intregued as to why it said in every WR1 For Sale advert that they were fastest production scooby at time. Anyone know what engine differences they have to mine?

get a 05/06 sti and stick a black interior in it

i got a full set of black seats and carpet for not much more than what i sold my blue ones for
then had the door panels re-trimmed in black for £20 per door

as for the wheels they are available in 114pcd i have seen a few sets come and go

There's an interesting comparison test in 'Evo' magazine for May 2004 between a WR1, a P1, a Spec C and a Type 25 Mk1 (Litchfield). They couldn't get anywhere near the claimed acceleration figures for the WR1, saying it about matched the STi PPP.

ahhh i see, the widetrack would be the one id go for as it has all the wr1 features plus the updated interior and wider track.

I had one back in 2006 and I'm now seriously tempted to get another as a 'keeper' as with any limited run car in years to come they could well go up in value. Mine was 21k back then, now you can get a good one for about 10-11k.

Just look how much rs500's are now, mega money.
