When I take my Scooby (MY99) to the region of let's say 200+ km/h
(on private roads :-))in 5 th gear and let go of the throttle
I hear a whining noise like there's a moped on my tale.
Beneath 180 km/h the sound stops.

The car drives like stink.............what's causing this noise?

All lubricant-levels are OK.

Alex.

Bearings in the gearbox by any chance? If the noise is not rev sensitive but speed sensitive then it may well be worn bearings somewhere.

Hope this helps

Jerome (New gearbox at 15000 miles following symptoms as above!)

Jerome,

I will take another look/hear.........what I remember it's speed
sensitive.

After how many miles with this whine did your gearbox give up.

Alex.

Well Alex,

I was told by a Subaru dealer that the gearbox should be replaced when I had less than 20000 miles on the clock. The noise started before 15000 miles! However, due to warranty expiry between the time the fault arose and the time the gearbox was replaced the cost has had to be borne by me at £3518 including a £700 surcharge to retain the gearbox. The rather forthright Dutch warranty agency dispute the necessity of having had to change the gearbox and insisted the bearings and crown pinion only needed replacing so be extremely careful about what you get replaced or you could be well out of pocket.

Well, I did a few test today and it seems to be speed sensitive.
So hopefully it's not the gearbox..............

It must be coming from somewhere!
Can it be the wind?

My quest continues.
