STi3 usually has a VF23.
IF it's the barings, it's an expensive repair. Replacement barings are NOT available, and this means the whole core will need replacing, costing circa £500. What are the symptoms ?
I would recommend getting it checked out by a company such as Turbo Dynamics. They can also do the repair, if that's the problem.
If it does need a new core, it may well be worth considering a hybrid, such as Christians.

Loud whining isn't good, but it's common to hear the turbo spool, even when just bliping the throttle, this normally means it's spinning freely.
Loss of boost can be down to several things, and I'd also check the up pipe, incase that's cracked. It did on mine, and made some horrible noises.
If you haven't used a long screwdriver, or similar, to "listen" to the turbo, try it. Put the metal end against the turbo, and your ear to the other end, then blip the throttle. If the barings have gone, you'll hear them. If the turbo is quiet, I'd look for other causes, before removing the tubo for a more thourgh checking.
